In order to make products using the Kanzashi technique, you will need the following materials and devices:

You can cut the fabric or ribbons with scissors, as well as with a soldering iron. To do this, you need a surface to cut on. It may be an old unnecessary kitchen board, but I preferred a regular wall tile (left over after repairs), its soldering iron does not burn through and it is easier to clean. Some petals can be burned with a candle or lighter.

It is better to use a thick and transparent glue so that it does not leave marks after drying. I opted for "Moment-gel": transparent, does not flow, adheres well.

Many people advise using tweezers when folding the petals.
I use tweezers when I fire the fabric over the candle.

• satin ribbons of any size, optimally 5 cm and 2.5 cm, but you can take any fabric: silk, satin, organza, etc.
• ruler
• pencil or chalk for marking straight squares
• scissors (any, most importantly - sharp)
• lighter and candle or soldering iron (if you know how to use it)
• glue "Moment-gel" or glue (hot) gun
• tweezers (preferably long)
• long and not thick needle

Types of Kanzashi petals

Kanzashi's technique is as follows: many small even squares of fabric are folded in a certain way and assembled into a flower. The petals themselves are sewn together or glued together.

As strange as it may sound, there are only 2 types of kanzashi petals: round and narrow, and the rest is room for your imagination.

Using the example of such a flower, we will learn how to fold narrow and round petals:

We use the same materials and tools as listed above.

We cut straight squares with a soldering iron or scissors. I have a satin ribbon 5 cm wide, which means 5 by 5 cm squares. Their number depends on the size of the flower that you will collect. There are 7 yellow and 5 green.

It is often advised to fold the leaves with tweezers. Frankly, my fingers are more comfortable, but whoever likes it better.

We fold it into such an even triangle. The fold itself is on top.

We apply the right corner of the triangle to the left.

And add it again in the same way, from right to left. Align the folds.

Cut the ends of the fabric evenly:

And we burn it a little over the candle, fastening the edges at the same time. This is done like this: holding the edges with tweezers, quickly draw the petal over the flame.

It is better to burn it at the very bottom of the fire, then the fabric will melt, and not burn.

We also cut and melt the lower edges. Here you can not glue them together, but simply melt the fabric so that it does not crumble.

We turn the yellow square into a triangle.

And now we collect the side edges in the middle, towards the bottom corner. The folds are at the top, at the sides.

We take the side corners back, check that the edges are evenly folded.

While the fabric is warm, I simply pinch the edges with my fingers.

How to make kanzashi flowers

Let's start collecting the kanzashi flower. We string yellow petals on a needle and thread. I prefer monofilament because it is not visible.

And we tie it in such a flower:

Cut out circles from cardboard and tape, put a cardboard circle on the tape, grease it abundantly with glue.

And, turning the edges, glue the fabric to the paper. Let the glue dry a little and once again spread the surface with glue.

Then we glue the blank to the flower from the back side.

It is better to use glue here than a glue gun. Since our flower is voluminous, it is very difficult to glue exactly right away. And while the glue dries, you can touch up the leaves to make it look smooth. It is difficult to do this with a glue gun - the glue hardens very quickly and it is rather problematic to peel it back off.

Kanzashi is a round petal, done step by step, in almost the same way as in the previous master class.
Fold the yellow patch in half.


Attach the ends that are located on the sides to the bottom. You will get all the side folds as in the photo.


Move the edges back and make sure they are even.


Trim the edges and burn with fire.
The bottom edge is also removed and burned. In this case, we not only singe the edges, but also glue them together. While the cut is still hot, press the ends with tweezers.

Assembling a flower from different petals

Now all our blanks from satin ribbons, which we made with our own hands, need to be put together.

From thick cardboard, you need to cut a small circle. Place it on the fabric, while covering it with textile glue.
Tucking the ends up, glue the tape onto the cardboard. Wait for this item to dry and re-saturate it again.

• pink and black satin ribbon;
• glue;
• scissors and tweezers;
• fire a candle or lighter.

It is necessary to cut the satin ribbons into small squares, this procedure will be understandable even for beginners. Their size will be equal to five centimeters.


Fold a piece of tape in half so that you have a triangle. Then one more time, roll it up.




Do the same with the black color of the blank. Nest one element into another so that the pink blank is inside the black one.


Using tweezers, wrap the end of the triangle in the middle, grabbing the two colors of the tape at once.


Join the edges of the product together. And spread the top of different colors on the sides.

Making a sharp petal with your own hands

In addition to the round petals, in the kanzashi style, there are other types. For example, with a pointed tip. From such a petal, you can decorate Christmas balls or make a Christmas tree from satin ribbons. Here is a master class that will show you how you can do it yourself.

Squares are cut from the tape, the scale of which will be six centimeters, and then, they should be rolled up in the form of triangles.

The resulting figure is doubled. The angles at this point must match each other. Now, fold this element again and cut off the bottom of it. The result obtained can be fixed with the fire of matches.

A sharp petal will turn out to be inverted if you do it along the entire length, then the execution technique will be correct.

We collect a flower from petals of various shapes

The next master class will be of interest to those who want to learn how a kanzashi flower is harvested, which, later, can decorate any hairpin or headband. Such a lesson is designed for beginners, so it will not be difficult to do it yourself. You will need a small list of materials, more specifically:

• new satin ribbons in any color you like, including white;
• glue gun;
• matches or a lighter;
• scissors with tweezers;
• needle and thread;
• decorative material that will decorate the product;
• pin.

The ribbons are cut into squares, seven pieces of each color, their width should be five centimeters. Take one of the squares and fold it diagonally, and then double it again. Pierce the result with a pin to secure.

An element of a different shade, wrapped in the same way as the previous square. The resulting kanzashi petal lies on top of the red one and folds in half. Cut off the excess edges with scissors and process with fire. As a result, we have a double sharp element.

From the remaining cuts, the remaining petals are made, of which in total, six pieces should be obtained. The resulting petals are strung on a thread and pulled together in a circle. Now, the first flower has turned out. Having cut a white ribbon into square blanks, make a sharp petal, which also combine into a flower.

From the green ribbon, make a sharp petal, but already turned inside out. It is also folded, then cut and processed with a candle, with further fastening of the edges.

As always, first of all, the tape is cut into squares. The size is 5 cm. Fold the cut diagonally to form a triangle. Now, fold the workpiece again. Such manipulations are carried out with a black tape. Fold the future petals so that the black is on top of the pink.

In order to form a petal with a curl, we wrap the tip of the triangle inward with tweezers, grabbing two elements at once. The edges of the ribbons are joined together, and the upper part is pulled apart. Cut off excess material from the curled petal and burn it with fire. For work we need:

1. fabric or silk ribbons of different widths. The latter is preferable for beginners: they are easier to work with.
   glue. Better a hot gun, for the same reason - it's easier for a beginner to work.
2. thick cardboard for the base. As a rule, these are simple circles with a diameter of 1.5-1.8 cm.
3. needle and thread. We will collect petals on it. If you are confident in your abilities, then you can immediately glue to the base.
4. lighter or candle. It will be required to singe the edges of crumbling artificial fabrics.
5. tweezers with thin legs. Not required, but it is more convenient for them to fold the fabric than just using their fingers. And it is safer to singe the edges, holding the kanzashi petal with tweezers.
6. ruler (to measure straight lengths of ribbons and fabric), tailor's pins (to secure workpieces), sharp scissors.
7. decoration for the middle

Cut the fabric or ribbons into even squares. In my personal experience, I noticed that the smoother the edge, the easier it will be to fold and neatly get the petal.

The general "theory" of folding is somewhat reminiscent of traditional origami. The base - a rectangular "sheet" of fabric is folded diagonally in half, then again in half and again in half diagonally. It turns out a kind of triangular "booklet" with three pages. Such a blank is suitable for any of the following petal types.

Types of kanzashi petals: round, pointed and curled petals

In the traditional folding technique, there is only 3 types of petal: round, round with a central fold, or "sakura", cherry petal and sharp. From these three types, Japanese craftsmen create all the variety of these beautiful hairpins.

In my works, in addition to these three, I also use some modern types of kanzashi petals, which are more likely related to "flower making" than a real khan tsumami kanzashi. Their main difference is the presence of additional folds in the middle, or just a slightly different shape of the petal itself.

Such deviations from the classical tradition do not find support in Japan itself. However, in the domestic open spaces, they are very common among needlewomen.

So, let's consider the basic principles of creating and options for using the main types of petals.

Round kanzashi petal

This is the first most popular and traditional petal. Its rounded, soft shape allows the creation of peony-like hairpins or young apple blossoms. They are very often used to create multi-tiered compositions. They work best when creating multi-layered, double, triple or more petals.

To fold it, we take our threefold blank and bend one of the leaves of the "booklet" back towards the tip of the petal. We straighten the upper arc and carefully fix the tip with glue or singe it with a lighter.

To make the finished element look as natural and gentle as possible I:

• Firstly, I use only natural fabrics. It is more difficult to work with them, but they give the most "rounded" and natural effect.
• Secondly, the size of the original square rarely exceeds 5 cm. More often it ranges from 3.5 to 4 cm.
• Thirdly, when working with artificial fabrics and ribbons, I singe the very tip, no more than 2-3 mm. blanks.

Round double kanzashi petals

The "layered" round petal looks more interesting. I use it to make larger, heavier brooches where there is only one such flower. In general, the kanzashi double petal allows you to play with both color and "fullness" of the shape. This is its beauty.

For it, we need to slightly change the process of creating the original "booklet". Prepare in advance the squares, the size of which will be slightly different from each other: the closer to the center, the smaller. I recommend a step of 3-5mm, depending on the type of fabric and the number of layers. But with a double petal, the squares can be the same.

Fold both blanks in half diagonally, lay them on top of each other in the order in which the color change is supposed. Next, follow the instructions to create a traditional round petal.

Sharp Kanzashi Petal

The second traditional petal used in the primordial tradition. It is used mainly to create flower leaves, with its help they create "greenery" around the "bud". As a petal, it is used to imitate an aster, holly, spruce legs, etc. cases.

To create such a petal, you just need to take and fix the leaves of our little book. The little book is the traditional, sharp petal.

Double sharp petal

Layered sharp petals look no less interesting than round ones. Here you can also play with both color transitions and fullness.

It is folded according to the same principle as the round one: the squares folded diagonally are superimposed on each other in the required order and then folded in half two more times.

My attitude to this form is very ambiguous. It is neither classical nor neoclassical. It is rather a color scheme. But oh well. We will make it like this.

We take the blank, our little book and carefully fold the inner "page" into a tube. For fixing, you can drop a little glue on the tip of the tube, and also trim the tip of such a petal a little more and glue it.

Narrow Kanazashi Petal

This is a variation of a sharp petal: take a blank of a sharp petal and cut off the required size from the bottom edge. The petal, as it were, acquires a certain "sediment", by varying which you can create very curious effects.
I use this technique to create zig-zags of heights in flowers and leaves. In addition, it allows you to put ready-made petals into each other, in layers, without folding problems.

Flat petal

And this is a variation of the already round kanzashi petal in a flat form. To execute it, you need to wrap the “legs” of the finished petal inside. The workpiece acquires a "draft", a flatter profile.
