2018 - Year of the Dog
Eastern calendar
When is Chinese New Year 2018?

The dog is a symbol of the penultimate eleventh year of the 12-year earth cycle of the eastern calendar. In countries where the main religion is Buddhism, the symbolic perception of the Dog, in my opinion, does not differ at all from the European, in the east, the Dog is endowed primarily with such qualities as loyalty, honesty and nobility and aggressive uncompromising attitude towards enemies ...
"Ancient Eastern epic"

2018 is the year of the Golden Dog

16 february 2018 year on the second new moon after the winter solstice according to the eastern (Chinese) lunar cyclical calendar, the year of the celestial trunk of the "Earth" time begins in the "Yang" stage of the earthly branch "Dog", 35 year of the 34th cycle of the new chronology.
What does all this mean?
Let's turn to ancient Chinese philosophy. Within the framework of her ideas, time in heaven and on earth flows in different ways. Therefore, to indicate time, earthly and heavenly signs were used. According to ancient Chinese ideas, the main stream of time is carried out along the celestial trunks, and time flows to the earth from these trunks along the branches diverted to it. There are five heavenly trunks, and 12 branches are taken from them to the ground.
"Earth" - a symbol of the Heavenly flow of the coming year, carries with it the properties of the same primary element: the governing direction is the Center; characterizing colors - yellow, brown and flesh; the presence of this element in a person means endurance, fertility, diligence and strategic thinking.

All the signs of the earthly branch are a product of the heavenly trunks, so the "Dog" branch 戌 inherits the characteristics of the generative stem-element "Earth" in the "Yang" stage, it also has some qualities of a real earthly collective image of a dog, in the ancient Eastern view it is: honesty mind, a sense of justice, simplicity, loyalty, attractiveness, friendliness, sociability and openness; unpretentiousness, calmness and sensitivity, and on the other side of the coin, cynicism, laziness, indifference, pessimism, anxiety, stubbornness and absurdity.

In China and in some neighboring countries, it is customary to celebrate the New Year in the clothes of the colors of the heavenly sign. The element "Earth" has several symbolic colors: yellow, brown (ocher) and flesh (beige). For celebrating the New Year, all these colors and their combinations are acceptable, but yellow is considered the main one. For New Year's men, it is advisable to have some element of clothing with a yellow color (for example, a tie with a yellow stripe or a beige shirt, in extreme cases, yellow socks ...). Women have more choice in terms of colors - they can afford beige and shades of tan, including golden ones.
The symbolic yellow color of this year of the Dog in the eastern calendar is somewhat different from our usual desired one - it is closer to yellow-brown, even, one might say, golden the device of the eastern calendar can be found in the next section).
I would like to add one more remark about the "earthly essence" of the year: The Dog's time branch is a product of the element "Earth" (Soil) and inherits mainly its qualities, therefore, despite the fact that the expressions "" or "" we have adopted already carry some semantic liberty of our perception of the designation of 2018 in the Chinese calendar 戊戌 , but the expression "Year of the Earth Dog", in a philosophical sense, has a deep meaning ... Since the branch of the Dog connecting the heavenly flow of time with the Earth is a product of the "earthly" trunk that carries time, then this year one should expect a stable and stable flow of time. It is worth noting that in mnemonic terms, the expression "" has every right to life ...
I would rather call the coming year a year Golden Dogs, since the originator of this branch carries the main stream of time. And, if we call 2018 quite according to our modern rules, then 2018 is.

So, in order to get the patronage of the Dog in the new 2018, when meeting the New Year, you need to wear something yellow, brown, golden or beige, or supplement the clothes with a certain touch of yellow or golden color, and on the table it is desirable to have dishes made of meat, poultry or meat products , but otherwise there are no restrictions - "Dog" is an omnivorous animal, with some predatory bias.

According to the table presented here, you can determine when to celebrate the New Year according to the Eastern calendar, as well as determine your eastern patron signs by date of birth ...

Table: 34 cycle. Chinese Cyclic Calendar 1960 to 2019 New Year Start Dates

This table clearly shows the 12-year calendar cycle of the earth's branches, and not very clearly 10-year - each of the five primary elements "takes control of the development of world events" by 2 sunny years... The main cycle lasts 60 years - the cycle begins from the heavenly trunk "Tree", the earthly branch "Rat" - now there is a 34th cycle from the beginning of the calculation of the new time, it began on February 2, 1984. (To view dates in a wider time interval (1924-2043), click on the table).

Eastern (Chinese) lunar cyclical calendar.

According to the worldview of ancient Chinese natural philosophy, as well as in the later antique, there are two courses of time - in heaven and on earth. In heaven, time continuously flows through five essential world-forming elements (elements, essences): “Wood”, “Fire”, “Earth” (“Soil”), “Metal”, “Water” - figuratively “along the heavenly trunks of these elements-essences ”. The main, most powerful stream of time overflows from one essence to another. When the flow of time flows into the celestial trunk of an entity inherent in a year (first year), it is in the Yang stage, when it starts to leave (second year), it passes into the YIN stage (Properties of entity elements are displayed in the table:).

In the earthly world - its own stream of time, it flows along the earthly branches, which are generated by the heavenly trunks. The fertile basic "Earth" generates on its trunk 4 branches per 12-year cycle: two in the YAN stage - Dragon, Dog; and two in the YIN stage - Bull, Sheep. The rest of the trunks, respectively: "Metal" - the branches of the Monkey and Rooster; "Water" - Rat and Pig; "Tree" - Tiger and Rabbit; "Fire" - Horse and Snake. All this underlies the construction, so to speak, of the outer cover of the cyclic calendar.

The true basis of the cyclic calendar is the results of observations of the motion of the planets, the Moon and the Sun. The founders of the calendar knew: that from new moon to new moon 29 and a half days pass; that for a terrestrial observer, Mars returns to the point of the starry sky fixed at the time of the beginning of observation in almost 2 years, Jupiter in about 12 years, and Saturn in 30. It takes 60 years for both Jupiter and Saturn to return to their original configuration - this period and was adopted as the main longest cycle of the calendar. The next 12-year cycle corresponds to the period of Jupiter's revolution. But the ten-year and two-year cycles are already a tribute to the metaphysical ideas of that time.
Despite this complex interweaving of the rational and the metaphysical, we can say that the Chinese cyclic lunisolar calendar is the first documented attempt by mankind to synchronize the time counting system with the movement of celestial bodies, which took place more than 4600 years ago!

Let's try to imagine what the coming year is preparing for us, using our tables of properties of primary elements.
So, 2018, (starting from 16 february 2018- New Year according to the Eastern calendar), the heavenly trunk “Earth”, the terrestrial branch “Dog”:

Weather 2018
The control of the weather will be almost entirely taken over by the heavenly trunk - the Tree, and the "Dog" will make only small additional adjustments.
We look at the table.
"Earth": control direction - center; energy type - moisture.
"Dog" (trunk branch Earth): accordingly, the control direction is the center; energy type - moisture.
The season corresponding to the sign "Dog" is late autumn.

Based on this information, we get that in 2018 the weather will mostly follow the climatic norm, but with some excess moisture.
The season corresponding to the "Dogs" branch (late autumn) can cause air temperature correction towards lower values ...
Spring and summer will arrive at traditional times.

Year of the Dog. Society 2018

The decisive factor in the development of public life will be the impact of internal events in the country. The influence of external factors will begin to increase only at the end of the year.

Year of the Dog. People in 2018

Success, according to tradition, will be most conducive to those who were born in the Year of the Dog, as well as those born under the shadow of the heavenly branch "Earth" (in the years of the Ox, Dragon and Sheep). In general, under the auspices of the "dog" this year you can solve many accumulated problems, as well as, showing patience and perseverance, establish life for yourself and your loved ones.

In the previous Year of the Dog (2006), a commemorative coin was issued in Russia with a rather successful image of a dog (photo) - that year, by the way, nothing bad happened in our country. So, keep in mind - this coin could bring good luck in 2018 as well.

P.S... Fashion in the Year of the Dog: Yellow browns and golden colors and shades in clothes, with elements of jewelry including metal, create an additional impetus to success.

In our country New Year tops the list of the most beloved holidays. No wonder, some even celebrate it twice: on January 1 and 14. When new year holidays end, you can sadly remove the tree and other holiday attributes until next December. Or you can leave nothing and celebrate the New Year again - by oriental traditions... The start date of the holiday is determined by the lunisolar calendar. According to him, the Chinese New Year in 2018 starts on February 16.

A bit of history

The history of New Year's celebration in the Celestial Empire is shrouded in legends. According to one of them, the holiday is associated with a terrible monster named Chun (Nan). This monster once a year attacked a small village, the inhabitants of which were forced to hide from him in the mountains. Once a beggar old man came to the village and asked permission to one of the residents to stay in her house during the attack of the monster. The woman tried to dissuade the old man, but in the end she allowed him to stay. The next day, returning to their village, instead of devastation, local residents saw unharmed houses and the same old man in red clothes. The old man was laughing, and around him lights were shining and firecrackers were thundering.

It turned out that Nan was afraid of the bright red color and could not stand loud sounds. Now the villagers no longer hid in the mountains, and once a year they organized noisy fun celebrations so that the evil monster never comes to their lands again.

When the New Year begins in China

New Year is not in vain considered the largest holiday in China. Preparation for it takes several weeks. It is considered very important during this period to finish all business, pay off debts and throw away unnecessary things in order to start the year with a new blank page. The house is thoroughly cleaned by the start of the celebration.

Instead of Christmas tree the Chinese decorate the Tree of Light by hanging numerous decorations, garlands and lanterns on it.

The day the new year begins is also known as the Spring Festival. According to local beliefs, this day leaves old year and winter with it. The awakening of nature is noisily welcomed with numerous fireworks, festivities and fairs. The celebration lasts 15 days.

The Chinese spend the eve of the holiday of the year with their loved ones. The family table is served with a variety of treats, fish, chicken, seafood, sweets. Dumplings are a traditional New Year's meal in China. It is believed that the richer and tastier it will be New Year's table, the more satisfying life will be in the coming year. At midnight, all doors and windows are opened in the house, clearing the way for the passing old year.

In the first days of the year, Chinese people meet with friends and family, go to visit each other to congratulate each other and celebrate the beginning of the new year together.

The Spring Festival date is set after the winter solstice on the first new moon, therefore, the New Year is Chinese calendar occurs between January 21st and February 21st each year.

Symbols of the coming year

The cycle of the eastern calendar includes 12 animals, which are the patrons of each coming year. In addition to animals, the calendar includes five elements (water, earth, metal, fire and wood), which also alternate. Thus, each year in China is symbolized by a combination that is repeated only once every 60 years.

Eastern symbols have firmly entered the tradition of celebrating our country, setting the mood for New Year's decorations and gift souvenirs.

Chinese New Year 2018 will symbolize the animal Dog and the elements of the Earth. The main color of the year is yellow. By the way, the chronology in China is different from ours. The coming year of the Dog will be 4716 according to the eastern calendar.

In China, it is not customary to give expensive gifts. However, congratulations are rarely complete without a gift. Traditional New Year's gifts in China are considered:

  1. Banknotes. It is customary in China to give money to children. They are packed in red envelopes and given to every child who is on the doorstep in the first 15 days of the new year. It is believed that this tradition brings good luck in the coming year.
  2. Symbols of the year. A popular gift is souvenirs depicting an animal that is the patron saint of the year. In the coming year, these are figures of dogs and various objects with their image.
  3. Paired gifts. It is customary in China to give small two-piece gifts for the New Year. These can be glasses, paired figurines and other gizmos. The two parts of one whole symbolize harmony and well-being in the family.

Gifts (except for envelopes with money for children) are usually given before leaving. Guests often do it secretly, almost unnoticed by the hosts.

Also in China there is an ancient tradition of handing two tangerines to the hosts at the entrance. When guests leave, they receive two other tangerines in return. This gesture is to wish each other good luck and wealth, as tangerines symbolize gold.

How to properly celebrate the year of the Yellow Earth Dog

In order for the coming year to be prosperous and successful, you can use some tips from Chinese traditions in the New Year's celebration:

  1. The celebration of the coming year must begin with preparation. It will not be superfluous, according to oriental customs, to get rid of all the excess trash that has accumulated in the house. It is worth reconsidering your grievances, dealing with debts and unresolved issues. If the New Year in your family begins in 2018 in a friendly and warm atmosphere, rest assured that the Yellow Dog will help support her throughout the year.
  2. Home decoration is best done in yellow, gold, light brown and pale greenish tones. They correspond to the color of the elements of the Earth, patronizing the coming year.
  3. Don't celebrate alone. The Chinese on New Year's Eve necessarily surround themselves with loved ones. In addition, the dog, symbolizing the coming year, is a herd animal, so it is better not to contradict her and celebrate the holiday in a pleasant company.
  4. The festive table must necessarily include meat or poultry dishes. The dog prefers meat food, and in the celebration of the coming year, it is better to try to please her.
  5. Clothes and accessories are also worth choosing from colors yellowish tint. The dog is a conservative, so do not overdo it with extreme short dresses and bright shiny accessories.

New Year's celebrations can be extended over two months. They can begin according to the traditions of our country on the night of January 1 and continue until the New Year according to the Chinese calendar, which starts on February 16 and is celebrated for 2 more weeks. For those who believe New Year's celebration most beloved, this is a great opportunity to extend Christmas mood and recharge with a positive attitude for the entire coming year.

Chinese New Year - Chun Jie, which means the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday for the Chinese, it has been celebrated for more than two thousand years. It falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, between January 12 and February 19. With the introduction of the Gregorian calendar, this holiday became known as the "holiday of spring" in order to separate it from the Western style of New Year. In everyday life, Chun Jie is called "Nian" (nian means "year"). According to legend, Nian is a terrible fierce monster with horns on its head, who lived in ancient China. All year round he was in the depths of the sea and only on New Year's Eve did he get out of the water, burst into villages, devoured cattle there and killed people. Therefore, the local peasants were very afraid of him and every year before the onset of the new year, whole families left the villages and ran into the depths of the mountains to hide from the predatory beast Nyanya.

When is the Year of the Dog 2018 in the Chinese calendar: the rules for celebrating the Chinese New Year

The ancient Chinese celebrated the New Year for a whole month, but the realities of modern life do not allow you to relax for so long, so the rest time was halved. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, incense is burned everywhere and fireworks are set off to scare away evil spirits who come to decorate the harvest (for the Chinese, New Year is associated with the beginning of sowing and is, first of all, a holiday of spring).

1) On New Year's Eve, decorate your house in red to save all your family from misfortune and sorrow. Red color, according to legend, protects from adversity, therefore, on New Year's Eve, it should prevail not only in the decor, but also in the clothes of all family members.

2) Set the festive table. Mandarins and oranges must be among the dishes. It is important that the number of citrus fruits on the plate is paired. The most suitable option is eight fruits per bowl.

3) According to Chinese tradition, one of the most powerful rituals that attracts well-being is a ritual called 108 oranges. On New Year's Eve, roll 108 oranges (about 30 kg) into your apartment so that they get into all rooms. And enjoy the "orange carpet" throughout the day. Raise the fruit from time to time, while repeating - "love to the house", "money to the house", "luck to the house" and so on. After 24 hours, distribute oranges to friends and family, make jam, make fresh juice, or simply eat. In eastern cultures, 108 is considered a sacred number, so such a rite must necessarily bring harmony and prosperity.

4) An interesting ceremony can be held on the eve of New Year's Eve, which will attract money to the house. To do this, take a red sheet of paper and a green marker or paint. Write down the amount you want to earn in the coming year, then glue a 10 kopeck coin and paint the sheet with images of bills and coins. After that, roll the drawing into a scroll, wrap it with gold and red ribbon and hide it in a secluded place.

5) One more ceremony will bring material well-being. Sew a small red cloth pouch. On New Year's Eve, fill it with coins, having previously washed them under running water. So you will wash away someone else's energy from the money. Tie the bag with a red and gold ribbon and place it in the most beautiful non-metallic container. Fill the bag with rice, and then transfer the "source of money" to the southeastern part of the apartment and leave it in the corner of the room.

When is the Year of the Dog 2018 in the Chinese calendar: the legend of the oriental calendar

Each year in the eastern calendar corresponds to one of the twelve animals - the signs of the Chinese zodiac. These are rat, bull, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

According to one of the legends, it was in this order that these animals came to the Buddha to say goodbye to him before dying. He, as a token of gratitude, gave them one year of reign.

It is believed that people born in the year of this or that creature take on the traits of its character. Both positive and negative. For example, people born in the year of the Rat are distinguished by intelligence and cunning, and in the year of the Rooster they are sociable and adore being praised.

In addition to animals, there are five more elements in the eastern calendar. These are metal, water, wood, fire and earth. They change once every two years. The elements also affect a person's character. For example, the Fire Goat is active and active, while the Earth Goat is restrained and dry.

Chinese New Year begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice, between January 21st and February 21st.

Eastern culture and Chinese traditions have firmly taken root in our daily life, have become our habits and traditions. Many people today began to celebrate the New Year in the Eastern style, while others, although they do not celebrate, are still keeping track of which animal corresponds to each coming year.

The eastern calendar is based on the Chinese reckoning, according to which each animal has a repetition cycle of 12 years. That is, the outgoing Year of the Dog will come next time: 2018 + 12 = 2030.

The coming of the Year of the Pig 2019 will be determined by the lunar calendar

There are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar. The cycle begins with the year of the Rat, then the year of the Bull, Tiger, Rabbit or Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and the cycle closes with the year of the Pig.

From which animal corresponds to a particular period, determine what tests or surprises to expect in the near future. The Chinese calendar prescribes which of the undertakings can be successful, and what should not be done during this period. In addition, the totem animal will "prompt" in choosing the right time for a special important event... It can be a wedding day, a day of conception of a child, buying a house, vacationing abroad, some serious projects, etc.

In our country, as in most other countries, it is customary to celebrate the New Year on the last day of the outgoing year and on the first night of the year following it. But for the Chinese, this is not at all the case. Chinese New Year is not a fixed date, it is associated with the lunar calendar, and this is the second new moon after December 21st.

The holiday can fall on one of the days, starting from January 21 and ending on February 20. For the Chinese, the cycle change is celebrated not for one night, but for 2 whole weeks, and ends the celebration traditional Celebration lanterns.

The date of the New Year of the Pig in 2019 in China is associated with the revolution of Jupiter around the Sun

The upcoming New Year 2019 is the last in a cycle of 12 years, during which Jupiter orbits the Sun once. The patron saint of 2019 is the Boar (or Pig). The Chinese also endow the totem animal with elements and color, and therefore 2019 will be the year of the Yellow Earth Pig.

All the characteristics of the year together and affect which beginnings will be successful in the New Year, and which ones it is better to postpone until next year. The totem will tell you with behavior to maximize its potential, and will help you to get around sharp corners.

Thanks to this totem animal, it will be possible to summarize all the actions performed in the lunisolar cycle and understand what the direction should be for the next 12 years of the cycle. A pig for the Chinese calendar is poise, patience and hard work, and therefore it is precisely these qualities of people that will help them achieve success in the coming year.

Celebrating the Year of the Pig 2019 according to the Chinese calendar must follow certain rules

Due to the fact that our and Chinese time reckoning does not coincide, it turns out that the owner of 2018, the Dog, remains the animal patron throughout January. And the Yellow Pig will come into its own only on 02/05/2019. On this night, a new cycle of revolution around the daylight begins for Jupiter.
