Altai is not for nothing called "Siberian Switzerland" - an amazing atmosphere of peace reigns here, and nature is unusually beautiful. New Year Holidaysheld in Altai, energize for the next year. Local residents celebrate their New Year - Chaga-Bairam, also known as the White Holiday. Its date each year is determined by lunar calendar and falls in February or March. In addition to treats and gifts, the holiday includes unusual and beautiful rituals.

Chaga-Bairam is always celebrated in the afternoon and ends at nightfall.

At the stone altars, called tagyls, fires (archyns) are kindled, the site and all those gathered are fumigated with juniper smoke. After that, the spirits of fire are fed with special ritual food: unsalted lamb, cheeses, which are laid in paired pieces into the fire. Milk is then poured into the fire and sprinkled on everyone present as a blessing. The process is led by a respected person: usually a clan elder or shaman. At the end of the ritual, each of its participants ties a ribbon to a sacred tree and offers a prayer for well-being in the coming year. After that, festivities begin: horse races, riding down the mountains on animal skins and other local fun.

The traditional New Year is also celebrated here on the night of December 31 to January 1. In tourist complexes and sanatoriums, banquets and show programs are organized, and sometimes they decorate a live Christmas tree right in the forest, and next to it they light a fire and grill barbecue.

To make the outdoor holiday a success, it is better to dress warmly - the Altai climate is rather harsh.

Gorny Altai is not in vain associated with health - the products here are of high quality and environmentally friendly. On new Year's table there are always pickles from local vegetables, desserts from fruits and berries, nuts, honey. The most popular meat is lamb, it is stewed or barbecued, but spices are always added a little - in Altai, the true taste of meat is very much appreciated. The most unusual festive dish is pigtails made from lamb intestines with vegetables. Well, the traditional alcoholic drink is araga, moonshine made from fermented milk.

"Hello Santa Claus - a beard made of cotton wool" - almost every second new year rhyme begins with these words, although very few people will remember the original of the middle of the last century, but each of us will forever have childhood memories of this holiday.

Many of my guests are interested in how the New Year is celebrated in Gorny Altai and what are the vacationers doing at this time? And in general, why go so far if you can sit at home?

New Year's Eve "Groundhog"

As a child, every new year was special and memorable. To a large extent, this is due to various and very long-awaited gifts. Remember how your eyes burned, and your heart beat faster in anticipation of something new and long-awaited. How did you get toys from under the tree, unpack boxes and drink sweet lemonade instead of champagne.

Where did it all go? In adult life, it is so accepted that every day is like exactly the same, only different. If you try to systematize the events of different New Year's nights by year, then some of you may find that your memories have turned into New Year's “groundhog night” - you remember different events, but do not remember what year they happened.

How to make the new year unforgettable

It is necessary to get out of the “comfort zone” more often, in other words, from home. For example, if you celebrate the New Year in Altai in 2020, you can be sure that these memories will certainly be special, and to the question: “What year was that? “- smiling, you will give an immediate answer.

Residents of Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Omsk and other large cities of Western Siberia are striving to us, to Altai, at this magical time. Every year, on the eve of the holiday, ice slides are built, skating rinks are poured, and also Christmas trees, garlands, decorations, banquet tables - in general, everything that will make the holiday kind and cheerful. It doesn't matter whether you are traveling with friends or family, be sure that the recreation centers in Altai for the new year 2018 will do their best to make this time memorable for you.

New Year's Magic

It is quite obvious that it is not slides and garlands that attract thousands of people to our places. It was not without magic, white as snow and pure as mountain air. One of my good guests (and I never have others) gave a very capacious explanation of what attracts city dwellers to Gorny Altai on New Year, he gave the answer short phrase: “Contemplation of winter peaks!”. How do you like this turn? Just imagine yourself in a warm room of a cozy hotel with a cup of coffee (tea) in your hands. Have you presented? Now look out the window. You see rocky mountains covered with a cap of snow. You see it right from the window of your cozy warm room, and you want to stay here, you feel the atmosphere of privacy, you feel that you are in the mountains. People come here just to be here. However, remember that this magical state only works in winter. And let the prices be new year holidays in Altai a little higher than usual, but this magic is worth it.

Active winter activities

But it's not all the same time to sit at the recreation center, because Altai in winter is absolutely new form things familiar to us. So, what lies ahead for us:

  • make a hike to the blue lakes with a visit to the bathhouse and subsequent swimming in them!
  • see winter attractions: the Chemal hydroelectric power station and the island of Patmos under the cover of snow;
  • go skiing, sleighing, snowboarding on Manzherok or Seminsky pass;
  • ride a dog sled;
  • visit the center of Russian culture in Cheposh “Desyatiruchka” with their special annual New Year's program;
  • and, finally, just take a walk among the mountains: in the forest or along the Katun;

The above entertainments are either absolutely free or available for a completely nominal fee (up to 300 rubles). Pay attention to the fact that the price of rest in Gorny Altai in winter is much lower than in summer, and there are no less impressions, and they are completely different.

Hot offer of Altai winter

It is customary to divide New Year's holidays into two arrivals:

From December 31 to January 03 - actually the new year itself, plus two days to remember what happened and make a short excursion in winter Altai;

The attentive reader will probably not be surprised that at this time hotel rooms are scattering like hot cakes from a plate. Demand often exceeds supply. Therefore, if you do not want to sort out the December unsold “illiquid”, then it is better to take care of places at tourist centers in advance, in October! It is in this month that experienced tourists literally "grab" all the hottest (like pies) offers, because know that good options there are significantly fewer people in accommodation than people who want to experience the winter magic of Gorny Altai.
