Day of the Airborne Forces in Moscow program 2018: how the heroes of the occasion will walk

Day of the Airborne Forces is a memorable date that is designed to contribute to the revival and development of domestic military traditions - the holiday was established by the decree of the President of Russia dated May 31, 2006.

The paratroopers invariably remain a symbol of courage, reliability and strength, who live by the principle: "Nobody but us!" - they are also called "winged infantry", "blue berets" and so on.

The festive program of the Airborne Forces Day-2018 will begin with a procession in honor of the heavenly patron of the "winged infantry" Elijah the Prophet: its participants will proceed from the temple of the Prophet Elijah on Ilyinka to Execution Ground on Red Square, where a thanksgiving prayer service will be served.

Then, the heroes of the occasion will be congratulated by officials, after which demonstration performances will be held on the main square of the country, as well as a solemn march of the company of the guard of honor of the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School (RVVDKU). And the culmination of the holiday will be a concert on Vasilyevsky Spusk.

The main gathering place for "blue berets" in the capital, as usual, will be Gorky Park. The tradition of celebrating the Day of the "winged infantry" here appeared in the early 90s of the last century: then, every August 2, a training helicopter landing was carried out in the park. However, in 1997, flights over the city were banned, but the PKiO remained the main meeting place for paratroopers.

The main events in Gorky Park, as before, will unfold on Pushkinskaya embankment. In particular, military bands will perform there again, performing songs that are iconic for the "blue berets". Festivities will also take place in Sokolniki Park. Festive events in honor of the Airborne Forces Day - 2018 are planned at VDNKh, and in Izmailovsky Park, and on Poklonnaya Hill.

Airborne Forces Day in Moscow program 2018: how this type of troops developed

The first parachute landing in the USSR, in which only 12 Red Army soldiers took part, took place on August 2, 1930, near Voronezh during the exercises of the Air Force of the Moscow Military District. That is why this date is considered the birthday of the Airborne Forces.

Recognizing the experiment as successful, in 1933, special aviation battalions were formed in the Belarusian, Ukrainian, Moscow and Volga military districts, from which the modern airborne troops subsequently grew.

Five airborne corps of up to ten thousand people each in the USSR had already been fully formed by the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, which from the first days of the war fought defensive battles in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States, in cooperation with other ground forces.

The 9th Guards Airborne Division defended the famous Prokhorovka near Kursk for more than a day - the "winged infantry" destroyed about 500 Nazi soldiers in this battle.

The paratroopers fought on the Karelian front, Moldova, Hungary, liberated the capital of Austria - Vienna.

Japan's actions in the Far East were completely paralyzed thanks to the Airborne Forces that landed in Harbin, Port Arthur, Pyongyang, Mukden, and southern Sakhalin.

The feat of the paratroopers, who fought with unparalleled courage and heroism, was reflected in Soviet military poetry, prose, cinema.

The famous song of Bulat Okudzhava "We need one victory" ("Our tenth airborne battalion") from the film "Belorussky Railway Station" by Andrey Smirnov is dedicated to the heroic paratroopers.

The paratroopers continued to perform feats in the post-war period. In January 1988, the famous 9th company was able to repel more than 12 attacks by the Mujahideen and hold Hill 3234, despite the tenfold numerical superiority of the enemy, until the arrival of the reconnaissance platoon. By that time, only five people remained in the ranks of the 9th company.

Since 2005, the Airborne Forces have been subdivided into airborne, airborne assault and mountain units according to their specialization. The former include the 98th Guards Airborne Division and the 106th Guards Airborne Division of a two-regimental composition, the second - the 76th Guards Airborne Assault Division of a two-regimental composition and the 31st Guards Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of a three-regiment composition the third is the 7th Guards Airborne Assault Division (mountain).

Traditions of Celebrating the Day of the Airborne Troops

Many people know about the tradition of the "winged landing" to put on their blue berets with vests on August 2 and meet in city parks with their comrades. For example, in Moscow, the traditional gathering place for airborne troops is Gorky Park. Also, many people know that on the Day of the Airborne Forces it is customary to swim in fountains and eat watermelons. Where did the tradition of eating watermelons come from, it is clear: these berries just ripen in time for August.

The "watermelon habit" appeared among the paratroopers in the late 1980s - after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, the Therussiantimes website writes. But where the love for bathing in fountains came from is unknown. There are many versions. According to the "blue berets" themselves, in this way they want to be closer to the sky, the reflection of which they see in the water of the fountains.

In addition, on August 2, the Airborne Forces drive around their cities in cars with the symbols and flags of the Airborne Forces. However, these are not all the traditions of the Day of the "winged landing". Also on this day, it is customary to reward the best paratroopers: they are awarded medals and presented with valuable gifts.

Those who have distinguished themselves receive extraordinary titles and new positions. Moreover, congratulations on their holiday "blue berets" are accepted not only from their family members, but also from the Minister of Defense and even the President. On the Day of the Airborne Forces, the main heroes of the occasion usually arrange demonstration performances and demonstrate the weapons and equipment that they have in service.

In addition, festive concerts, hand-to-hand fighting master classes and parades are organized on 2 August. Also on this day, the Airborne Forces recall their dead comrades: as a rule, not a single one on August 2 is complete without a ceremony of laying flowers at the memorials to the paratroopers.

Interesting facts about the Airborne Forces, the holiday of which is celebrated on August 2, 2018

Everyone knows that the abbreviation of the Airborne Forces means Airborne Forces, but the paratroopers decipher it as Uncle Vasya's Troops. So they call the famous commander of the Airborne Waxes Vasily Margelov, who led this branch of the military from 1954 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1979.

It was thanks to "Uncle Vasya" that the landing troops found their vest and blue berets (before that, the berets were crimson), and the paratroopers began to land directly in combat vehicles, and not just independently with parachutes.

Military equipment, dropping down with the paratroopers inside, could immediately go into battle - it did not have to stand and wait for the crews to descend on their parachutes. They say that in the first BMD, which was supposed to be thrown out of the plane, Margelov put his son in and closed the hatch behind him with his own hand.

So, under "Uncle Vasya" the Airborne Forces acquired their unique and irresistible mobility. Margelov, who led the landing troops for more than 20 years, was able to create in them that special spirit, thanks to which service in the Airborne Forces began to be considered the most prestigious.

Day of the Airborne Forces will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 2, in Gorky Park and Sokolniki. This year, the Russian Airborne Forces will be 87 years old. A giant white parachute will be hung over the main entrance to the Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure. A field kitchen is deployed in the park for all visitors. An exhibition of military equipment will be held in Sokolniki, photo zones will be organized in the park, in which it will be possible to take selfies in the form of paratroopers.

Gorky Park

In Gorky Park, the holiday will take place from 12:00 to 17:00. At the entrance between the columns will be placed a white parachute measuring five by five meters and banners with the symbols of the Airborne Forces and the slogans "87", "Nobody but us" and others.

A field kitchen is deployed in the park, where everyone can taste buckwheat porridge with stewed meat and tea for free.

And on Pushkinskaya embankment, a concert will be held with the participation of Olga Kukhta, military singer Vladimir Maya, the Forsage group and the Kaskad ensemble, created during the hostilities in Afghanistan.

Sokolniki

In Sokolniki, the holiday will begin with a parade of conscripts and contract soldiers, members of the Yunarmiya patriotic movement and veterans of the Airborne Forces. Gathering of participants - at 11:30 at the main entrance, at 12:00 there will be a procession accompanied by a brass band along the main alley, a large circle through the 4th Luchevoy Prosek. It will end at the Festival Square.

Events for the Day of the Airborne Forces will last in Sokolniki until 16:30. Ten military vehicles will be brought to the park - armored personnel carriers, airborne combat vehicles (BMD) and light military equipment. Basically, they will be located on the Festival Square, some of the equipment will be placed next to the main entrance. The stage on the square will be decorated with a camouflage net, and anti-tank hedgehogs will be installed nearby. Not far from the stage, four photo zones will be organized with samples of modern weapons (without cartridges), camouflage clothing for snipers and airborne military uniforms - everyday, field, ceremonial. Everyone will be able to take a picture in the form of a paratrooper.

Banners with the slogan "Glory to the Airborne Forces!"

Everyone will be able to take part in football, volleyball and hand-to-hand fighting competitions, as well as try to assemble a parachute and disassemble weapons. In addition, a chess tournament will be held among the soldiers in Sokolniki. In total, about 300 servicemen will come to the park. Guests will be able to take part in armwrestling and Russian bench press tournaments, but for this they will have to go through the qualifying stage.

The holiday will end with a concert at Festivalnaya Square, where the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Airborne Forces will perform.

The airborne troops were formed on August 2, 1930, when a 12-man unit was parachuted for the first time in an exercise near Voronezh.

On August 1, 2018, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu opened a monument to Margelov on Polikarpov Street in Moscow. The ceremony was attended by Margelov's son, a veteran of the Foreign Intelligence Service, Colonel-General Vitaly Margelov, Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Vladimir Shamanov and Chairman of the Union of Russian Paratroopers Valery Vostrotin.

The head of the Ministry of Defense noted that Margelov personifies an entire era in the formation and development of the Airborne Forces: “Thanks to General Margelov, the airborne assault was equipped with the most modern technology, new methods of its use were tested. Iron will, organizational talent and front-line hardening of the commander made it possible to form the invincible spirit of the "blue berets", to turn them into a mobile and formidable striking force, unparalleled in the world. "

"In the Airborne Forces, it is allowed to wear, at the command of the commander, with casual and field summer uniforms (who is supposed to be according to the norm), take a blue, summer open cotton jacket and khaki trousers in boots, boots, equipment," says the order of the Ministry of Defense from July 26, 1969 signed by Marshal Grechko.

However, the paratroopers did not walk in crimson berets for long. Soon, General Ivan Lisov proposed replacing the color of the hats with blue. This idea was enthusiastically supported by Margelov himself, and in 1969 it was finally approved. It is believed that this color was chosen because it is most associated with the sky. At least once in history - during the introduction of troops into Czechoslovakia - the color of the beret caused confusion. The Soviet paratroopers were initially considered UN military, who also wore blue hats.

By the way, the paratroopers owe their current uniform to Margelov. When the design of the uniform was being developed, the artist Alexander Zhuk prepared two versions of the headdress: crimson and protective colors, but the latter remained only on paper. But the raspberry beret was approved in 1967, and Margelov himself put a resolution on it: "Leave it for parades in Moscow!"

“Personally comrade Margelov is disciplined, efficient, demanding of himself and his subordinates, he makes decisions quickly and reacts sensibly to the situation, - the document says, - The division is prepared, morally stable, capable of performing combat missions. "

From the combat characteristics of Margelov: “He proved himself to be tactically competent, proactive, capable of controlling the battle of the formation. He knows the tactics of modern combat, he can build interaction between the combat arms. (...) He pays a lot of attention to putting together the personnel of the division during the period of the combat training reviews, the division showed a combat-ready unit - ready for offensive battles. "

During the Great Patriotic War, he commanded a rifle regiment, was chief of staff and deputy commander of a rifle division. In 1944, Margelov was appointed commander of the 49th Guards Rifle Division of the 28th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. Under his leadership, the crossing of the Dnieper and the liberation of Kherson took place. For this, in March 1944, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Under his command, the 49th Guards Rifle Division took part in the liberation of the countries of South-Eastern Europe. In 1967 he was awarded the rank of General of the Army.

In the Soviet-Finnish War (1939-1940), Margelov commanded the Separate Reconnaissance Ski Battalion of the 596th Infantry Regiment of the 122nd Division. He captured the officers of the Swedish General Staff during one of the operations.

The paratroopers themselves unofficially decipher the abbreviation of the Airborne Forces not as the Airborne Forces, but as Uncle Vasya's Troops. Vasily Margelov, who commanded the Airborne Forces in 1954-1959 and 1961-1979, is called "Uncle Vasya".

Not all paratroopers spend the day of the Airborne Forces in fountains with watermelon and booze. Krasnoyarsk employees donated blood of the day to those in need that day. Some of them are “honorary donors”. In addition, at the end of the holiday, the paratroopers intend to visit a charitable foundation and provide material assistance to sick children.

And near Vologda, meanwhile, Santa Claus himself decided to congratulate the paratroopers, no matter how strange it may sound. At the Trufanovo airfield, at the Open Sky festival dedicated to the Airborne Forces Day, the winter wizard decided to try himself in the role of a paratrooper and jumped with a parachute from a height of 2.2 thousand meters.

And this is how the Day of the Airborne Forces in Tula passed.

The park has thoroughly prepared for the celebration: a festive concert is taking place on Pushkinskaya Embankment from 13:00, and some of the establishments on the territory have stopped working just in case. In particular, if you are not a paratrooper and suddenly, forgetting yourself, find yourself in the park, you will not be able to get to the Gorky Park Museum and the observation deck of the Main Entrance arch, to the souvenir shop, to use the rental points in the parterre, or to enter the Garage. Some cafes are also closed.

The main platform where paratroopers gather in Moscow is traditionally considered to be Gorky Park. As in previous years, the main entrance is decorated in honor of the holiday: this time with laconic striped flags, on which the white letters of the Airborne Forces are guessed.

Muscovites in social networks write that in the center of the capital, paratroopers who have gone mad because the fountains are turned off are tearing out the pipes of the irrigation systems and independently arrange ritual bathing for themselves. In addition, the "blue berets" urge people to go swimming in the Moskva River. More like Internet trolling, although, of course, in such heat and murky waters of the Moscow River, it seems attractive. The Gazeta.Ru correspondent has not yet been able to see where the brawl described in social networks is going on. However, it is not evening yet.

After that, the paratroopers noticed a police detachment approaching them. Although the law enforcement officers looked resolute and menacing, the conversation with the Airborne Forces did not last long. “Guys, just be careful, nobody wants problems. Happy holiday to you! ”, - said one of the policemen and left with his colleagues.

It turns out that there is a special offer for paratroopers on Manezhnaya Square today. A man dressed as Vladimir Monomakh approached the company in blue berets and said: “We can take a photo for you on this day for free”. Without thinking twice, the young people surrounded the "king" and took a memorable picture. A girl dressed as a crazy empress ran to him.

During the photo session, a foreigner passed by who happened to be in Moscow on a holiday. There was one question in his eyes: "What's going on here?" Noticing his interest, the paratroopers put a bottle of vodka on the ground and decided to invite the guest of the capital for a joint photo.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already congratulated the personnel and veterans of the Russian Airborne Forces on their holiday. “The Russian Airborne Forces have a rich and glorious history, which the current generation of soldiers and officers is justly proud of. Your predecessors served the Motherland with faith and truth, in the most difficult situations they invariably demonstrated the highest competence, composure and personal courage, sacredly kept their devotion to the fighting brotherhood, ”reads the congratulation posted on the Kremlin website.

Let's take a look at the center of Moscow. On the street +29 degrees. But who has ever stopped? A fountain has recently been on the Birzhevaya Square - it has already been tested by heated fans during the World Cup. Now paratroopers are catching up to him along with their families, the correspondent of Gazeta.Ru reports. Turquoise shorts and a white T-shirt - the kids fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the holiday. However, at the intersection of Birzhevaya Square and Ilyinka, they will be disappointed. Today, as luck would have it, the fountain was turned off. After standing no more than two minutes, company after company leave the square in search of a more humid place. Following them are detachments of police officers. It seems that today there are more of them than Muscovites who decided to take a walk in the center.
