A little about traditions

As has been the custom from time immemorial, Armenians celebrate the New Year with their family at a rich table. If there are many children in a family, this is considered great happiness, and gathering with relatives under one roof to see off the Old Year and celebrate the New Year is an immutable rule.

Back in the 19th century, the Armenian New Year was celebrated very modestly, congratulations were only in words, and festivities took place in Navasard in November or August. Today in Armenia, Kahand Papi and Dzyunanushik (Father Frost and Snow Maiden) come on December 31, and the holiday corresponds to all the usual attributes.

According to tradition, the head of the family fastens gifts on the tree, and in order to avoid grief and troubles in the coming year, everyone is obliged to eat a little honey before the main meal. Those who come to visit scatter nuts throughout the house, which promises prosperity and prosperity. With the chiming of the chimes, the main celebration begins, accompanied by jokes, funny stories, dances and songs.

Celebration

Not a single Armenian New Year is complete with excellent wine and national dishes. The indispensable attributes of the table are dried fruits, nuts, “anusha” soup, dolma with rice and “darena” bread. The food is eaten leisurely, guests and hosts make toasts and good wishes, old people make speeches filled with centuries-old wisdom. After everyone has had their fill, received and opened gifts, it’s time to go for a walk.

Folk festivities in Yerevan take place in decorated and illuminated squares, on the central Republic Square and adjacent streets: Karmir Banaki, Khanjyan, Moskovyan, Saryan and others. There are restaurants, cafes and fairs for residents and guests of the city, as well as performances and concerts.

If in last time If you visited the country back in Soviet times, we assure you that after so many years, almost everything has changed here. Except for traditional hospitality.

Traditions of celebrating the New Year in Armenia

Initially, Armenians celebrated the new year on March 21 (Amanor) and August 11 (Navasard) - according to the spring and autumn farming cycles. New Year in the European style began to be celebrated in Armenia not so long ago - from the end of the 18th century - and, of course, they introduced many original traditions into its celebration. For example, today many Armenian children wait for Kahand Papa (Armenian Father Frost) on New Year’s Eve, and many combine the Christmas tree with the traditional “tree of life” - a hand-tied small sheaf of 5 ears of wheat.

Nevertheless, the country’s entry into the USSR actually erased all boundaries regarding the traditions of celebrating the most important holiday of the year. For the most part, Armenians prefer to celebrate the New Year with their families, visiting close friends and relatives during the holidays. The famous Soviet New Year's films are still very popular, and New Year's addresses of two presidents at once - Armenian and Russian - are broadcast on television.

As for the capital of Armenia, here the New Year celebration is becoming increasingly Europeanized. For example, on Northern Avenue this year, on December 10, a traditional Christmas market opens with festivities, the sale of hot mulled wine and a lot of entertainment for adults and children. And, of course, no one canceled the fun with friends all night long.
