A pin cushion is the very first and most valuable thing for a tailor.

From history The history of needle beds goes back to ancient times. Needle cushions were made from fabric and paper, which were brought from abroad and were very, very expensive. Only very rich people could afford such a luxury.

Later, needle beds began to be made from a variety of materials and different bases - wood, ivory.

And when they learned to melt metal, the base of the needle beds was made of tin, copper, silver and even gold.

Soft ... (needle beds).

Each person keeps pins and needles in a pincushion. The needle is the oldest human invention. It was invented even before the wheel. The pin cushion is a simple and useful invention found in every housewife. It was used by both peasants and noble people.

It is difficult to say exactly when the needle bed appeared, but the stages of its development are known. Unlike modern times, many centuries ago a needle was considered a luxury. Therefore, the need arose for its safe and careful storage.

In the 15th century, containers made of silver and ivory appeared. At the same time, the needle beds began to be stuffed with wool and covered with fabric.

In the 16th century, it became fashionable to attach pincushion pads to silver and wooden supports.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the needle beds were made of high quality fabrics: linen, satin and decorated with embroidery.

In the 19th century, needle beds became more of a decorative element in the form of a glass for eggs, a basket on a metal, glass or porcelain stand.

In the early 20th century, pincushion clips became popular. The structure was attached to a table to prevent the fabric from slipping.

In the Ethnographic Museum. IN AND. Romanov has a sewing needle case, which was used in the Mari Territory at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries. The cushion of the needle bar is located on a stand of four vertical stops, which are decorated with hand-carved screw threads. A compact box with a lid for small sewing accessories is located under the stand. It closes with a small turntable. On one side of the box, there is a continuation of the design for the needle bar. This is an expanding flat board on which the embroiderer sits down.

Everyone was engaged in needlework. It was customary to go on a visit with embroidery. And the needles had to be stored somewhere. Needle beds were popularly called needle beds. This item was highly revered. Mothers gave needle cushions to their daughters. When a girl got married, she took the needle cushion with her to her husband's house. The richer the family was, the more expensive the needle holder was.

And now there are completely different needle beds: both sewn and embroidered in the form of flowers, hats or animals, and in a jar, and travel, and, of course, antique.

Needle cushions are a wonderful souvenir that can be used as an accessory for sewing and embroidery, as well as for decorative purposes.

Handcrafted pin cushion, always unique and original. Having tried to make such an interesting little thing with your own hands once, you will certainly want to try to make the second, third. In any case, this is a very necessary thing.

So what is a pin cushion?

Most people perceive the needle cushion as a small everyday object, not having any special meaning. The very origin of the needle cushion is shrouded in mystery, but you can trace the main stages of the development of this accessory.

The history of the emergence of the needle bed goes back to those distant times, when the fabric only began to appear, and needles were considered a luxury, so there was a need for their safe and careful storage. The first needle beds were made using paper and any fabric, they were shifted among themselves. However, only rich people allowed themselves to have such cribs.

One of the main occupations of women in Russia was needlework. Each girl had a chest or casket filled with all sorts of little things for sewing, and one of the most irreplaceable was the pin cushion. In some houses, rag dolls, such as Paraskeva, acted as needle cushions, but it was still considered wrong to prick rag amulet dolls with needles, therefore, do-it-yourself rag cushions, embroidered with braid or decorated with embroidery, were often used.

V 15th century containers made of silver and ivory appeared. At the same time, the needle beds began to be stuffed with wool and covered with multi-colored fabrics.

V 16th century it has become fashionable to attach pincushion pads to silver or wooden supports.

What do you think, where did the ladies of the world put the necessary little things in the 19th century?

Until the middle of the 19th century, it was fashionable to carry a handbag in hand - a reticule. Usually, women kept threads, needles, embroidery, a mirror, perfume and other female accessories in a reticule. And the most necessary attribute in the reticule was the needle cushion.

Needle cushions are different in style and shape, and they can be made from various materials: in the form of geometric shapes, hearts, figurines of any animals, handbags, hats, in the form of cakes and flowers; made of fabric, yarn, cardboard, foam rubber, sewn or knitted.

Homemade needle beds can be decorated with embroidery, applique, sequins, beads and ribbons.

To fill the needle bar, you can use any sponges made of dense foam rubber (household or bath), synthetic winterizer or cotton wool.

Altar "href =" / text / category / altarmz / "rel =" bookmark "> the altar was laid with magnificent bread wreaths decorated with magnificent ornaments.

Among the Indians, such dough figurines used to have a symbolic or mystical meaning. In China, starting from the 17th century, puppets were made from dough. Large dough paintings were popular in Eastern Europe. Among the Slavic peoples, such pictures were not painted and had the usual color for baking, which was considered very attractive. In Russia, at Christmas in the Vologda, Arkhangelsk, Olonets provinces, they baked "cows", "bulls", "cockerels", "pigs", "goats" from wheat dough as a sign that there was more "animal" in the yard. These cookies were given to relatives, neighbors, decorated the windows.

Materials and tools for kneading, making and dyeing salted dough products

v To knead salted dough you will need: shallow cup; salt (fine or medium grinding; coarse grinding of salt is not recommended, since the dough can break during molding, and crack when dried in the oven.); a spoon or wooden stick (for mixing the constituent components of the salt dough); water.

v Sculpting tools: sculpting board, wooden rolling pin, stacks, soft brush, glass of water, aluminum foil, fork, nail scissors, toothpicks, garlic press, flat comb, various cookie cutters and various additional materials (beads, buttons, flowers, leaves, etc. .)

v Tools for painting products: paints - watercolors, acrylics, gouache; soft brushes (round and flat - "squirrel", "pony") of different sizes from No. 1 to No. 6; a glass of clean water; PVA glue, "Moment"; varnish; dry napkin or rag.

Method for preparing salted dough

Salt dough recipe: 1 glass of salt (200 g), 2 glasses of flour (200 g), 125 ml of a glass of water, 1 tablespoon of oil (sunflower).

You can use wheat flour to make salty dough. (products made from wheat flour will turn out to be light, milky in color, it is easier to paint them after drying) or rye flour (rye flour gives the dough a brown hue, vaguely reminiscent of the color of clay; after drying, the product must be primed with light paint). You can also mix wheat flour with rye flour in a 1: 1 ratio.

Dough made from rye flour alone is less elastic than wheat dough.

(When kneading salted dough (when mixing flour and salt), you can add 1-2 teaspoons of dry wallpaper glue, previously diluted in a little water. Wallpaper glue added to salted dough increases its strength and gives more elasticity when sculpting. In addition to wallpaper glue, starch can be used, but more will be needed in proportion.)

Remember! In no case should the dough be kneaded by eye, since an excessive amount of salt makes the products fragile, and with an excessive amount of flour, the crafts do not hold their shape well.

Mix salt with flour, dilute the mixture with water at room temperature. Knead the dough, like for dumplings or noodles, not very cool, but so that it does not stick to your hands. The main thing is to knead and knead the dough well until it becomes elastic. The readiness of the dough is checked by breaking the dough into small pieces, while grains of salt should not fall out of the dough. If the dough is too steep and crumbles, add a little flour and knead it again. It is important to knead the desired composition of the dough, when it is mixed correctly, it is a pleasure to work with it.

Remember! If children will work with the dough, it is necessary to knead it abruptly, because in children's hands the dough will become soft and sticky too quickly, like plasticine (children knead it very diligently before making something blind).

The surface of the table for kneading and rolling the dough must be smooth and even. No dents or other surface defects, as everything will affect the quality of the manufactured products.

It is best to sculpt with dry hands so that the dough does not stick, but if it does start to stick to your hands, it is enough to dip your fingers in flour. Since the surface of the dough dries quickly in air, it must be stored in a bag or tightly closed jar (each time take out as much dough as needed for a given part, and remove the excess immediately).

Various objects can be imprinted on the surface of the dough, for example, beautiful embossed buttons, shells, the end of an empty ballpoint pen, etc. This should be done immediately after sculpting, otherwise the dough will be covered with a crust, and instead of prints, you will get ugly breaks. Prints of textured fabrics look very impressive. Before printing, lightly moisten fabrics and objects with vegetable oil so that they do not stick to the dough.

To glue the parts, moisten the brush in water and run along the side to be glued. All decorations - beads, blades of grass, twigs, flowers, beads, plant seeds, etc. are connected with PVA glue - this is a guarantee that these parts will not fall out of the dough during the drying process in the oven.

Drying, dyeing and storage of salted dough products

There are two types of drying salted dough products: natural and oven drying.

Natural drying. Leave the finished product in a warm place in the air. With this drying, cracks sometimes appear on the product, because it dries out more slowly inside than on the surface. Cracks can be caused by a draft or high humidity in the room. In summer, you can expose the product to dry in the sun.

If the product is too thick, then it is better to dry it immediately in the oven, because 1 mm of thickness needs one day of drying. And the large thickness of the product will lead to the fact that it will soon become limp from the inside before it dries out.

Drying in the oven. The finished product must be dried in air, and then baked in the oven at a temperature not exceeding 100 ° - 120 °. With preliminary drying, crafts retain their color and shape better (especially sculptures). Hollow figures do not have pits or irregularities. The salt does not have time to dry inside the craft in a day, which means that it will melt when fired in the oven and will play not only a protective function - save from rodents, but also give the products strength.

The finished product is dried in the oven until it begins to brown. As soon as the product begins to brown, there is no need to worry, it will no longer be deformed. If the product begins to swell, immediately reduce the gas flame, otherwise deformation is inevitable. When drying, you can open the oven door and so adjust the temperature inside.

If the product is completely dry, it can be easily removed from the baking sheet. To make sure that the product is not damp inside, you can lightly tap it with your index finger: if the sound is ringing, then it is ready, and if the sound is muffled, then the product is damp inside, and you need to let it dry for some time.

After firing, dough products can be painted and varnished. You can paint both the already dried product and the dough itself before molding. Dyeing the entire product after drying is the simplest, but at the same time laborious option. Acrylic varnish is used for varnishing. It is water-soluble, non-toxic and dries for 6-8 hours.

Unfortunately, it happens that a piece breaks off from the product, what should I do? It is necessary to coat the glued surfaces of the product with liquid PVA glue or universal glue "Moment" and press them tightly against each other. It is advisable to leave the product alone for 24 hours in a dry, warm room, so that the product finally "grabs".

After firing and drying, dough products harden and can be stored for as long as necessary. Store salt dough products in a dry place: moisture can spoil your crafts irreparably.

Technological maps

Modeling the main elements

Ball- Pinch off a piece of dough, remember it well and give it a ball. Then put the blank on your open palm, cover the dough with your other hand on top and roll the ball in a circular motion. Be sure to check if it is even. If cracks or wrinkles form, it is better to re-roll the ball. The part should be flat and smooth. If you do not pay attention to defects, then later when drying and coloring the product, this can become even more noticeable and even lead to a breakage of the product. The ball can also be rolled with one hand.

A drop- Roll a small ball, then roll it with your index and middle finger on your thumb, so that the part takes the form of a tear or drop. If you slightly flatten the part, you get a petal.

Sausage- Pinch off a piece of dough and give it an elongated shape. Place the workpiece on the table and start rolling back and forth. A long sausage should be rolled with both hands from the middle to the edges. Can be rolled in pieces, keeping the same thickness. If the sausage begins to tear, squeeze it along its entire length with your fingertips and roll it again. If you try, the sausage can be made very long or very thin. To make a sharp tail, you need to roll the sausage with increased pressure on the edge.

Cake- Pinch off a piece of dough and shape it into a ball. Place the ball on one palm and crush the other.

To make the base of the needle bar you need:

Roll out the dough into a layer 0.5 cm thick, cut a circle and a rectangle out of it. Close the rectangle in a ring and coat the seam with water.

Dry the details. Then connect the parts together by gluing a roller of salt dough inside.

To make a ball - a needle bed, you must:

Cut a circle out of the border twice as wide as the neck of the needle bar. Select threads to match the fabric and sew a circle along the edge with a "forward needle" seam, stepping back 5mm from the edge.

Pull the circle a little around the edges and place a filler inside - a synthetic winterizer. Form a tight ball, pull off the thread and make a knot.

0 "style =" border-collapse: collapse; border: none ">

Oval leaves - roll a ball, make a cake out of it, give it the shape of a droplet. Push through the strips with a stack - "streaks". Gather two or three leaves together and glue to the base of the needle bar.

Carved leaves - roll a ball, make a cake out of it, give it the shape of a droplet and cut the edges with a stack. Glue the finished leaves to the needle bar.

Flowers from cakes - roll up several balls of different sizes, make cakes out of them and put them on top of each other according to the pattern.

Round flowers - roll up the ball, flatten it slightly and use a stack to push the strips. In this way, make several large and small flowers.

Glue the flowers to the needle bar. Glue a small ball in the middle of large flowers. In small flowers, make a hole with the back of the brush.

Crackle effect. Cover the item with black acrylic paint. Allow to dry for 1 hour, then cover the needle bar with forming solution and dry for 1 hour. After the needle bar is well dry, paint it with white acrylic paint and leave for another 1 hour. Then, with acrylic paints, lightly tint the leaves and flowers, which will enhance the effect of antiquity. Glue on white mother-of-pearl beads. Sew a needle ball.

Technological map "Poppies"

Equipment: salt dough, a modeling board, a brush, a glass of water, stacks, scissors, acrylic paint, wire, black beads, red fabric and sewing thread, synthetic winterizer.

Poppy petals - roll 5 balls out of dough, shape them into droplets and press them into thin cakes.

The middle of the flower - roll a ball and use a stack to push through the strips

Attach the petals to the core, lubricating them with water to hold them together. Using a garlic press we prepare a “fringe” - stamens and glue them around the middle of the poppy.

Poppy leaves - roll a ball, make a cake from it, give it the shape of a droplet. Push through the strips with a stack - "streaks".

Glue the finished flowers and leaves around the entire perimeter of the needle bed (remembering to coat everything with water)

Bee. First, make the wings: roll a ball, make a thin cake from it and give it the shape of a droplet. The wings must be dried in the oven or naturally to keep them firm.

Torso: Roll a ball and shape it into a pear.

Insert the finished wings into the body.

Cut off two pieces of thin wire - these will be the bee's antennae. Fasten them in the head area. Roll up two small balls and glue them in front of the wire antennae - these are the eyes of the bee.

Paint the finished product with acrylic paints. Fix black beads on the edge of the antennae - wires. We string the bead onto the wire and screw it on. The antennae are ready. Sew a ball out of red fabric - a needle bed.

Technological card "Fruit Garden"

Equipment: salted dough, a modeling board, a brush, a glass of water, stacks, scissors, clove seasoning, varnish, edging fabric, sewing threads, synthetic winterizer.

An apple - roll a ball, flatten it slightly and stick the cloves into the grooves: on one side with the leg inward, on the other - outward.

Pear - roll the ball, slightly stretch it, giving it the shape of a pear and stick the cloves: on one side with the leg inward, on the other - outward.

Plum - roll a ball and push a strip in the middle with a stack.

Make flowers from balls of the same size.

Leaves - roll a ball, make a cake out of it and give it the shape of a droplet. Push through the strips with a stack - "streaks".

Glue fruits, leaves and flowers to the water all over the base of the needle bar.

Dry the product well. Coat the finished product with varnish. Sew a needle ball from the side.

History

In ancient times, when the fabric was just beginning to spread, the beds were made using any fabric and paper, which were shifted among themselves. But only rich people could afford them. Later, the needle beds were made of wood or ivory, and between them was a velvet fabric, where pins and needles were kept.

Needle cushions

Needle cushions are often created by needlewomen for decorative purposes. They can be of a simple shape - a square, a circle, a heart - or complex: in the form of a handbag, a figurine of an animal, a flower. A simple homemade needle bed can be made from cardboard, padding such as cotton or foam, and fabric. Needle cushions are decorated with embroidery, applique; instead of fabric, knitting can be used.

Making a needle cushion is a popular handicraft activity for preschoolers. A needle bed made with his own hand is then used to teach the child to handle things carefully - after class, you need to put your needles into it.

Finished needle beds

Needle cases-cases can be of different shapes. The mushroom case is used not only for storing needles, but also for darning.

Magnetic beds can be made in the form of a stand, or in the form of a box with a magnet inside.

Excerpt from the Pincushion

The friends were silent. Neither one nor the other began to speak. Pierre glanced at Prince Andrew, Prince Andrew rubbed his forehead with his small hand.
“Let's go to supper,” he said with a sigh, getting up and heading for the door.
They entered an elegantly, newly, richly decorated dining room. Everything, from napkins to silver, faience and crystal, bore that special imprint of novelty that occurs in the household of young spouses. In the middle of dinner, Prince Andrew leaned his elbows and, like a man who had something in his heart for a long time and suddenly decided to speak out, with an expression of nervous irritation in which Pierre had never seen his friend, began to say:
- Never, never marry, my friend; Here is my advice to you: do not marry until you tell yourself that you have done everything you could, and until you stop loving the woman you have chosen, until you see her clearly; otherwise you will be mistaken cruelly and irreparably. Marry an old man, worthless ... Otherwise, everything that is good and high in you will be lost. Everything will be spent on trifles. Yes Yes Yes! Don't look at me with such surprise. If you expect something from yourself ahead, then at every step you will feel that everything is over for you, everything is closed, except for the living room, where you will stand on the same board with the court lackey and an idiot ... But what! ...
He waved his hand energetically.
Pierre took off his glasses, which made his face change, showing even more kindness, and looked at his friend in surprise.
“My wife,” continued Prince Andrey, “is a wonderful woman. This is one of those rare women with whom you can be deceased for your honor; but, my God, what would I not give now, so as not to be married! I tell you this one and the first, because I love you.
Prince Andrey, saying this, was even less like that Bolkonsky, who was lounging in Anna Pavlovna's armchairs, and through his teeth, squinting, spoke French phrases. His dry face trembled all over with the nervous revival of every muscle; the eyes, in which the fire of life had previously seemed to be extinguished, now shone with a radiant, bright brilliance. It was evident that the more lifeless he seemed in ordinary times, the more energetic he was in those moments of almost painful irritation.

The history of the needle bed
Each of us perceives the needle cushion as a small everyday object that does not have any special meaning. The origin of the needle bed is shrouded in mystery, but you can trace how it arose and improved over the years.
The history of the emergence of the needle bed begins from those distant times, when the fabric just began to appear, and the needles were a great luxury, so there was a need for their careful storage. The first needle beds were made using paper and fabric, shifting them among themselves. And even such beds were only able to have rich people.
In later times, needle beds were made of ivory, wood, or metal. Then they began to stuff them with wool and cover them with fabrics. And only later, needle beds began to be made of high-quality fabrics: satin, linen, they began to be decorated with various embroideries. At the same time, the needle beds became more of a decorative element in the form of glasses for eggs, baskets.
Nowadays there is a wide variety of needle beds made in various techniques. I suggest you make one of them according to the presented master class. Sew it for yourself, and may it always please you, being close at hand. Good luck to everyone!
