The motley grandmother's plaid, patchwork rugs and bedding, bright pillows and potholders with multicolored appliqués have been familiar to us since early childhood. Such cute little things have always filled the house with warmth and comfort. Unfortunately, only grandmothers remember the technique in which those very cozy and cute blankets are made. And it would be necessary for every girl and woman to familiarize themselves and make friends with the patchwork, in order to be able to fill their hearth with something to their relatives and friends.

Fabric for making quilt in patchwork style

Patchwork is a patchwork sewing from fabric of various household and decorative items - bed, blankets, bags, clothes, tablecloths, kitchen utensils, etc. The technique has been known for thousands of years and is popular all over the world. Skillful craftswomen create all kinds of outlandish works of art using the patchwork method. And beginner needlewomen are advised to start with wide blankets from "quick squares". Such products are practical and aesthetic, moreover, they are optimal for mastering such delicate science.

Today, patchwork is considered one of the most demanded patchwork techniques. It consists in stitching various tissue scraps according to the mosaic principle. In the hands of experienced needlewomen, bright pieces of material turn into luxurious products that surprise and delight. But not all fabrics are equally good for patchwork.

To find the right material for creating a patchwork quilt, you can follow the traditions of our grandmothers: simply save all the scraps and leftovers from sewing clothes or bedding. From such different-sized scraps, you will certainly get a motley blanket. And you can do much easier - buy a set of fabrics for patchwork in any specialized store. Since the most difficult process in the patchwork technique is working with the material, the fabric must certainly be not only beautiful in appearance, but also of sufficient quality.

Cotton fabrics are considered the ideal material for patchwork, because they meet all important requirements:
  • Do not crumple;
  • Do not rush around;
  • Do not shrink;
  • Do not fade;
  • Easy to fit.
Linen, silk, viscose and wool are used a little less often in patchwork, since such materials are more capricious and always require special care in work. Experienced craftswomen begin to use sophisticated fabrics; for beginners, there is nothing better than cotton!

Sewing material stores offer customers a huge selection of cotton fabrics of various colors and weights. Unfortunately, they are not always suitable for patchwork. Some options crumble too much in the cuts, while others are ironed too tight or settle after washing. It is recommended, nevertheless, to buy special fabrics for patchwork that have undergone a special pre-treatment. It is very easy for beginners to work with such material.

Popular types and schemes of patchwork

The patchwork style is a wide field for ideas and experiments, which has no boundaries in combinations of shapes, colors, types of material. Here any creative idea of the author can be brought to life. Fancy patterns, appliques with animals and flowers, geometric mosaics and other equally interesting options can be easily folded into a warm bedspread or comfy blanket.

Of course, you can create a diagram for a product with your own hands, armed with imagination and a sharp pencil. And you can use ready-made ones, of which there are hundreds of thousands, depending on the types of patchwork.

Consider the most popular types of patchwork:

  1. Classic english... In this version of the patchwork, all parts of the same shape and size are used, as a rule, in two primary colors. Patterns for English patchwork are very primitive. For example, squares of two shades, located on a checkerboard, or symmetrically stitched triangles.
  2. Oriental patchwork... The manufacturing principle is similar to the classical one, while it differs in the use of various decorative elements - ribbons, beads, zippers, etc. Most patterns for oriental patchwork products allow for greater freedom in the shapes and sizes of parts. For example, it can be arched and wavy patches connected and decorated with satin ribbons.
  3. Crazy patchwork... The most "free" kind. It is characterized by its aesthetics and attractiveness. As a rule, the shape, color and size of parts are not limited by anything at all, except for the scheme used. And the schemes at the same time can be incredibly diverse: the image of nature or flowers, floral or geometric ornament, complete abstraction.

Making a patchwork quilt step by step

Of course, the abundance of various complex patterns and variations of products in the patchwork technique surprises even those craftswomen who have devoted decades to this art form. And for beginners, there are more primitive, but no less beautiful and functional options. For example, a “quick” square blanket. It's better to start from it.

Preparatory stage

First of all, it is worth deciding on the color scheme and size of the future product. Although for the first time, any available segments of all kinds of shades will do. Prepare in advance a piece of fabric for the seamy side of the blanket, corresponding to its future dimensions, and the same piece of padding polyester. Don't forget about the edging fabric. It is better to buy it with a margin. In our case, to make a blanket from squares, you need a chintz of three colors, scissors, a ruler, pins, chalk, a template and a sewing machine.

It is recommended to pre-soak the cotton fabric in hot water, then rinse it with cold water, cover it and iron it out. A tablespoon of starch is diluted in a glass of cold water. Then the mixture is poured into 2 liters of hot water and stirred thoroughly. The chintz is rinsed in a slightly cooled solution, ironed while still wet and dried.

After preparing the material and collecting all the necessary tools, you can proceed to the preparation of those very "fast" squares, of which the blanket will consist.

Preparation of "quick" squares for a blanket

The production of the elements we need begins with the preparation of the strips. From two pieces of fabric of different colors, cut two strips of the same width. Then fold them face to face and sew along one edge. At the next stage, cut a wide strip from the third piece of chintz, corresponding to the dimensions of the previous two together. Stitch the resulting third strip to the first two on both sides, folding them face to face, as you did the first time. As a result, you will end up with a kind of sleeve turned inside out.

At the next stage, cut the resulting sleeve in an even zigzag into isosceles triangles. To do this, use a square, triangle, or triangular ruler template. As a result, from one long "sleeve" you will get several double triangles, and, accordingly, in the spread - squares.

Assembling squares using patchwork technology

To create a patchwork-style product, a wide variety of patterns and styles are used. The squares you have can be folded into zigzags, scales, triangles or rhombuses. The choice of style depends only on the taste of the craftswoman. In such a case, it is not recommended to rush. It is better to put the parts together in several different ways, among which it will be easier to determine the most successful one.

The assembly of "fast" squares is carried out as follows: first, the details are cut into longitudinal stripes, only then the strips are stitched together. The main thing is not to forget to iron the finished seams. In fact, the front of the duvet is complete at this stage.

Making a blanket from "quick" squares

Any fabric, preferably natural, can be used as the back of the blanket. Batiste or chintz will do the job best. To quickly assemble the blanket, lay the prepared fabric for the wrong side face down, then spread a layer of padding polyester and lay a piece of squares face up on top. Use the sewing machine to sew the future product around the perimeter. The border can be the edges of the picture or the edges of the squares.

Until the process is complete, it remains only to make the edging of the luxurious blanket. To do this, you need to cut a strip of suitable fabric 8 cm wide and slightly longer than the side of the product. Apply the resulting strip to the front edge of the blanket, aligning the edges. Use the sewing machine to stitch the strip to the blanket, then fold it over to the wrong side, fold it over and sew again on the right side. Use this method to trim the rest of the blanket as well.

This completes the production of a blanket from "quick" squares. For the first time, such a product is considered optimal in terms of the level of complexity. But even if the result is not quite perfect, you should not be upset. The second try will certainly do better!

Patchwork is now more popular than ever. In between the noisy bustle and tiring working days, you really want to touch something warm and cozy. Even those women who have never thought about needlework before are beginning to confidently master patchwork. Decorative cushions, aprons, coasters for hot dishes, colorful panels, curtains for a country house, ultramodern bags and many other gizmos can be created by experienced craftswomen.

Novice needlewomen should pay attention to several useful tips:

  • Before using a new fabric, it must be washed, ironed, and only then cut out. Thus, it will be possible to prevent accidental shrinkage, discoloration or other nuisance.
  • The color of the thread used should match the color of the patch or differ by a couple of tones.
  • Use a pencil or soap to trace. It is prohibited to use the pen.
  • Cutting is done on a shared thread. In this case, the part will not be skewed.
  • When cutting, leave an indent of 1 cm on all sides. If the fabric is loose - 1.5 cm.
  • Perfect templates are made of plastic.
  • Patchwork is impossible without a ruler.
  • The fragment obtained in the course of work must be ironed after each line.

Patterns for making quilts using patchwork technique

Depending on the chosen patchwork technique, the seamstress may find it useful for certain patterns of templates:
  1. Square technique... It implies the creation of a product from square patches or square blocks of different colors. In this case, a pattern in the form of a regular square or a pattern of stripes will come in handy, from which a square block will be made.
  2. Strip technique... This is parallel or circular stitching of stripes of different colors and lengths. To create a product using this technique, you will need a pattern of different stripes.
  3. The triangle technique... Much like squares. Most often, patterns of isosceles, equal in size, but different in color, are used for it. Parts can be sewn along the short edge to form a strip, 4 pieces each in a square or star shape.
  4. Honeycomb technique... It got its name from the end result. Upon completion of the work, the drawing of the product will resemble the pattern of a honeycomb. For manufacturing, patterns of symmetrical hexagons are used.
  5. Technique lapachi... It is considered the most interesting and at the same time difficult. Sections of fabric with raw edges are attached to the canvas, thereby forming a volumetric drawing of a certain scheme or a chaotic image of a volumetric abstraction. If a specific pattern is chosen for the product (bird, animal, flower, etc.), patterns for each detail will be needed. If chaotic sewing of different patches is planned, you can do without patterns altogether.

Patchwork products are not only beautiful and cozy home decorations, but also positive emotions from the process of making them. Agree, a few pieces of fabric, a sewing machine and fantasy combined can work wonders.

The technique of sewing from pieces of fabric is called patchwork and is recognized as one of the types of arts and crafts. It is no longer considered a purely utilitarian trend, when the poor strata of society used waste matter to make a patchwork quilt with their own hands or another thing necessary for the household. Patchwork has turned into art - bedding and kitchenware, curtains, branded clothing and even colorful panels are made from it.

Quilting or patchwork

The technique of making things from shreds can be called quilting. Novice craftswomen can not always figure out how it differs from patchwork.

While the techniques are similar, there are differences. Patchwork is a narrow concept, it means the actual patchwork sewing. Quilting literally translated from English means "stitch" (sewing). It combines two or more techniques, including embroidery. The products are voluminous thanks to the stitch. So a do-it-yourself blanket made from pieces of fabric, even the simplest one, is nevertheless made using the quilting technique, which includes patchwork.

You can sew anything from scraps of fabric, for example, extremely practical things, or embody your most daring ideas, letting your imagination fly free. One of the patchwork techniques is called “crazy” (“crazy”), however, for novice craftswomen it is too complicated.

Sewing from shreds with your own hands is not easy. Work takes time, perseverance and accuracy.

Accessories and tools for needlework

Patchwork requires a specific set of tools. Below is an exhaustive list, you may not need something:

Making patterns

It only seems - we randomly cut pieces of fabric and sew anything from the shreds with our own hands. Patterns in patchwork play the same role as sewing patterns in clothing. It is with their manufacture that work on the product begins.

The same templates can be used many times, therefore, to create them, they take a durable material, best of all transparent plastic, through which you can see the pattern of the fabric. First, the required element is drawn (square, rhombus, triangle), then a seam allowance is added and a second contour is drawn.

The finished template looks like a frame. Parts of the future product are cut out along its outer contour, and stitched along the inner one.

Selection and preparation of fabric

It is not necessary to use a special patchwork fabric for needlework - any you like will do. Perhaps the necessary materials will be found at home - pieces left after sewing clothes or old, but not shabby things. Each fabric its features:

Sintepon or batting is used as a pad (middle layer).

Any fabric need to prepare before cutting, otherwise, during operation, the product may shed, shrink, warp:

  1. Old things are unstitched, all seams are cut on them, and on new fabrics - the hem.
  2. The next step is washing. If this is not a problem with cotton and denim, then wool and silk are laid out in one layer on a wet sheet or towel, rolled into a roll and left for 2-3 hours.
  3. It is advisable to starch thin material.
  4. The damp cloth is ironed from the inside out along the lobar thread. Better to use an iron with a steam generator.

Rules for creating products from shreds

Patchwork is a rather complex art. There is no “take and do” here. You need to plan everything clearly, follow the sequence of actions and not break the rules. Interestingly, it is better to start with making large items. Sewing a blanket is much easier than, say, a kitchen potholder, and it will take the same time to work.

Idea and sketch

There are patchwork kits on sale, consisting of a minimum set of tools, pieces of fabric, ready-made schemes and detailed instructions. But they are expensive, and it is much more interesting to come up with a pattern on your own. If you do not use ready-made sets, you can get an exclusive item, while unloading the house from unnecessary scraps and old clothes.

There are many techniques patchwork, for example:

  • simple blocks - English Park, Quick squares, Oiler;
  • pattern sewing - The Riddle of Solomon;
  • on the basis - Monkey's tail, Russian square;
  • crazy;
  • blooper or yo-yo.

You can come up with ideas on your own, spy on the Internet or with photographs. A do-it-yourself blanket from scraps is the easiest to make. In addition, it will be useful in the household, amaze others, and the craftswoman will be able to understand whether it is worth doing patchwork or is it better to switch to something else.

First you need to create a sketch. The color wheel can help with the selection of colors. At first, it is better to choose a simple pattern of squares, use fabrics of the same texture in several prints. It is best to cut one block of shreds, spread it out on a white sheet and check if the colors are harmoniously combined.

Then a diagram is drawn on which the shape and dimensions of the parts will be indicated, the numbers assigned to each group of patches are put down. Based on this, the number of parts is calculated.

Correct fit

It will be easiest for novice craftswomen to sew a patchwork quilt from elements of the same shape and size - squares, rectangles, triangles. In order for the product to look neat, all fragments must be of equal size. This is what templates are for.

The pattern is applied to the fabric, the borders are outlined with chalk or soap. You need to cut the part along the outer edge, sew - along the inner edge.

The amount of seam allowance depends on the type of fabric - the denser it is (fine wool, jeans) or the more difficult it is in the cut (silk), the more indentation is needed. Drap, thick wool is cut immediately along the inner edge of the template. If the parts are stitched together, you get a thickening that can spoil the appearance of the finished product. Such fabric is stitched in a “zigzag” end-to-end, but it is better to first “plant” the fragments on non-woven pieces and grind the edges.

When cutting, the direction of the share thread must be taken into account - in squares it should be parallel to one of the sides, in triangles - perpendicular to the base. If you neglect this requirement, the finished product will skew.

Assembly sequence

The assembly of complex products is necessarily carried out as follows: first small parts are sewn, then large ones. This will preserve the pattern, avoid distortions and deformation.

Most patchwork crafts are made up of blocks. For example, in a blanket made of squares or triangles, the fragments are first sewn in stripes, and then they are combined into a large product.

A shred to shred is swept along the inner edge of the marking with threads or fastened with pins. Then the pieces are sewn together on a typewriter. After that, the allowances are ironed. Only then the blocks are sewn into a single canvas.

Ironing the product

Ironing the stitched fragments is the most important stage of the assembly, neglecting it means ruining the product:

  • ironing preferably on the front side;
  • the seam is ironed under a dark colored fragment;
  • all allowances of one block are smoothed in one direction, the next in the opposite;
  • to avoid distortions, the strips are ironed along;
  • use a steamer for problem tissues.

The sintepon deteriorates from a hot iron. It is ironed at a low temperature using a steam generator or a damp cloth.

Quilting basics

The final stage when sewing bulky items that provide for the presence of a lining and insulation is a stitch. It firmly connects the three layers of the product, does not allow it to warp during washing or cleaning, knock off the batting or padding polyester. The stitch patterns can be very complex, made with multicolored threads.

The lining and insulation are cut out, if possible, from a single piece of fabric, adding about 5 cm to the size of the front cloth from each edge. First, the top and the inside are quilted, then connected to the wrong side. This is done in order to avoid deformation of the finished product.

Quilting can be done on a typewriter or by hand in the following sequence:

  • the fabric is smoothed with hands from the middle to the edges on a flat surface;
  • the layers are pinned;
  • the corners of the canvases are sewn together;
  • always quilted from the middle to the periphery;
  • the edge of the blanket is edged with a cloth or ribbon.

The simplest master class

To make your first quilting product, you can use a master class with step-by-step instructions. The easiest way to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands is using the quick squares technique. The finished product will have a size of 220x200 cm, rapport - 20x20 cm, material - chintz.

  1. We make calculations. We need 110 squares, add 0.5 cm on each side for the seams. Each piece will have a size of 21x21 cm. Naturally, the canvas is not dimensionless. Chintz is produced in different widths, it is most convenient to use 150 cm. 16 strips 21 cm long will be required, 7 squares can be cut out of each (2 will remain superfluous).
  2. For convenience and less fabric consumption, we will use 4 different prints - 4 stripes 84 cm long. Taking into account the shrinkage, you need to take more material.
  3. We wash, starch and iron the fabric.
  4. Using the template, mark the material and cut it out along the outer edge.
  5. We lay out the details on a white sheet and come up with a sequence of their connection into a pattern.
  6. We sweep the squares exactly according to the internal markings, we sew them on a typewriter.
  7. We iron the seams.
  8. Putting together the front of the blanket by stitching the blocks together.
  9. We remove the basting, iron it.
  10. We cut out insulation from batting, and from coarse calico - purl tightly. On each side, we leave for an allowance of 3-5 cm.
  11. We connect the batting and patchwork, sew the corners, sweep, starting from the middle.
  12. If the sewing machine does not have a quilting foot, use a zigzag stitch. Seams can be placed over or next to squares. Sew in the direction from the middle of the blanket to the edges.
  13. We attach the lining separately.
  14. We process the edge of the blanket. You can use one of the fabrics you are using or contrast tape. Its width should be equal to twice the seam allowance and spacer plus 1 cm per seam.
  15. We fix the corners of the product manually or with a machine.

The blanket is ready!

Patchwork quilts: photo gallery

Sewing a patchwork quilt is undoubtedly more difficult than an ordinary one. But in this regard, it is more appreciated when creating home comfort. Looking at such a beautiful product, everyone will be able to appreciate the painstaking work of the needlewoman who worked on its creation.

The easiest patchwork quilt to make for a novice needlewoman is a quilt made of squares.

To sew a patchwork quilt using squares, you should know the following:

  1. When the square has a side of more than 5 cm, then the cut is carried out along the share thread.
  2. Blanks of squares are sewn into long strips in accordance with the prepared pattern or scattered.
  3. Rectangles are sewn together with short sides.
  4. The sewing technique is as follows: the first square is applied with the front part to the second, then both are sewn along the allowance line. The rib is ironed and ironed to the side of the darker fabric square.
  5. After sewing on the third square, it is folded with the front side to the second and is done in the same way as in the previous paragraph.
  6. The squares are sewn together one by one to form stripes. They are sewn along the seam allowance line and ironed in one direction.

How to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands

In order to start sewing a patchwork quilt, you need to stock up on the following tools: needles, pins, threads, scissors or a roller knife, an iron for smoothing seams, a sewing machine, knitting needles or a crochet hook (when leftover threads are used to knit shreds), fabric pieces or special kits for creating blocks.

On a note! A patchwork quilt can also be made from old things, gaps, after washing them. The material used must be of good quality, that is, not shabby and not fading.

How to match colors and textures for a patchwork quilt?

The shreds should be the same thickness.
When choosing color shades, you should refer to the color wheel. The best will be a combination of contrasting colors (for example, blue and yellow), or a single color scheme (for example, different shades of blue in one block).

We invite you to watch a video with a training master class on sewing a patchwork quilt with your own hands.

Sewing the front part

The simplest technique in patchwork is the fabric squares method.

Technique "Fast squares"

Laying out a mosaic from squares is a simple technology, you just need the right selection of fabric. Squares of the same size are cut from fabric pieces. In order for the blocks to be formed, you need to sort them in accordance with the color scheme, pattern, texture.

It does not take much time to create such a bedspread, especially if there is no need to follow the sewing pattern and the sequence of the flaps. We sew the squares into ribbons using the technology described above, and we connect the ribbons together.

"Chess"

The name of the technique speaks for itself: the meaning of the method is to alternate squares of two different colors, which resembles a chessboard, resulting in an interesting pattern. It will be best to use fabrics that have the same pattern, but different shades. Also, the blanket will turn out to be original if you alternate patches with a striped pattern, placing them horizontally and vertically.

Making such a quilt from shreds is simple, and this method can be implemented by any novice needlewoman. You just need to be careful in choosing the material and carefully connect the squares in the chess plot.

"Watercolor"

We sew such a patchwork quilt using squares arranged in a specific sequence (according to the scheme), the result of which is the creation of a floral pattern. With the right choice of color and pattern, such a patchwork quilt will become a wonderful piece of furniture. Skillful craftsmen use this method to create bedspreads that resemble paintings depicting flowers, sea and natural landscapes.
Below we offer you options for ready-made patterns of patchwork quilts.

"Diamond"

This technique is an intricate arrangement of a square within a square. This method is often used as an element in an ancient technology called "Russian square" or "Pineapple". Sewing such a patchwork quilt is simple and easy.

  1. Take two pieces of fabric and cut out pieces in the shape of squares: 2 from one, and 1 from the second.
  2. Two identical squares are cut diagonally into two pieces, resulting in isosceles triangles.
  3. The largest side of the four triangles is applied to each of the four sides of the square and sewn.
  4. It should be noted that the seam allowance is 0.5 - 0.75 millimeters.

It is worth noting that one blanket may well be made with three types of shapes: square, triangle and stripes.

Quilt patterns

Assembling the blanket

After the quilt patchwork is ready, proceed to the assembly stage. In order not to take up a lot of surrounding space when working, it will be more convenient to first divide the blanket into blocks and sew it in parts. The seams are sewn using a stitch "in the seam", and then over the "zigzag" end-to-end.

Initially, you need to quilt all the blocks separately (together with the synthetic winterizer filler and lining), leaving large allowances (at least 10 cm). The patchwork top should be smaller than the lining and padding polyester.

Once the quilt has been laid out on the floor (facing to the floor), the edges must be attached to the floor surface with tape so that the canvas does not move. First you need to sew the patchwork top on the blocks, then straighten the synthetic winterizer with all care.

It is not necessary to stitch together pieces of padding polyester. It is enough to superimpose the edges on top of each other, and then pin them with a pin. After joining the tops, the lining is sewn with a blind seam.

With this assembly, the stitch will look beautiful and neat, and your painstaking work will be appreciated.

Edge processing

To process the edge of the blanket, the selected fabric must be cut into a strip 10 cm wide. The length of the sewn strips corresponds to the size of the blanket around its perimeter.

Fold the fabric inside out and iron the fabric. Sew on the fabric, bend the edging so that angles of 90 ° C are formed. When the tape is sewn to one side, then you need to bend it, wrap it up and sew, applying a blind stitch by hand. Next, process the corners from the seamy side. Everything! Your DIY patchwork quilt is done!

How to sew a patchwork quilt using the patchwork technique

The patchwork blanket is created using cotton, chintz, calico, satin, linen or silk.

Patchwork: different types

There are several ways to sew patchwork quilts. Let's consider the most popular and interesting options.

  1. The standard patchwork technique assumes that the needlewoman will step by step sew together individual textile fragments that have geometric shapes. This technology is the simplest that any beginner can handle.
  2. The quilting technique differs from the traditional one in that each piece is sewn with the rest of the different types of stitches using a sewing machine. Often, when creating a blanket, the fabric is supplemented with a lining (batting or other reinforcing material).
  3. Crazy patchwork is quite unusual. The blanket is created like this: fragments of different sizes and shapes are sewn together. Moreover, the elements are connected by any lines, complemented by beads, bright buttons, beads and other decorative elements.
  4. Japanese technique. It uses silk fabrics with geometric patterns and ornaments. These are sophisticated and catchy blankets that perfectly complement the interior.
  5. Making a blanket in the style of a knitted patchwork with your own hands is a very interesting job. All fragments are knitted separately, and then they are sewn using dense threads, as a result, a complete product is created. There is also a technique by which motives are linked in the process of creating a blanket.

How to sew a patchwork quilt from old jeans

Between the things that are a pity to throw away, there are often worn denim trousers, or even several. If you have the material and good patience, then you can try to work hard on creating an original denim patchwork quilt.

First, you need to cut out squares from jeans that have the same size. Then sew them together randomly.

On a note! When sewing, you can use colored fabric inserts. In this case, it is better to work without a special scheme. Then the result will be interesting and non-standard.

In this case, one should take into account the recommendation of the designers - the use of 3 primary colors in the product. If denim shreds are in the same color scheme, then it is better to combine them with fabrics of other colors. In the case when denim shreds have a wide variety of colors and textures, then the use of other fabric inserts will be unnecessary.

The use of patches with pockets will be original, because they are very convenient and practical. You can put various little things in them, which are convenient to keep close at hand.

We sew a patchwork quilt from stripes

Interesting results can be obtained by using strips rather than squares for a patchwork quilt. From them, you can build a rainbow row, patterns in the form of parquet or square.

The strips are cut so that they have the same width. Also pay attention in which direction the share thread is located (taking into account the seam allowances).

Seam strips are best done using a fabric backing. A strip is placed on the surface of the fabric (equal to the size of the blanket or more) so that its front side is directed upwards. The second strip is superimposed on top of the first with the front part to it, and both of them are attached to the base. The following strips are sewn in the same way.

On a note! Diagonal stripes look great. They are sewn on a fabric backing from the center where the first strip is installed. The rest are sewn to it on both sides.

Sewing on the cut and spread strips is carried out on the front side of the fabric base. Thus, the entire part of it is filled. Then put damp gauze (or other material) on top, and cut off the excess fabric.

So, we told you about the different ways of sewing a patchwork quilt with your own hands. It is not difficult, but rather painstaking work. However, the result is well worth the time and effort. The patchwork quilt will decorate the interior of any room, will become a pleasant and memorable gift, reminding of your love and care.

If you still have any questions, or if there are additions to the topic of the article, write in the comments below. Our experts will answer you shortly.

The tradition of finding application for each piece of fabric appeared back in the days when clothes and interior items were sewn on their own. Everything in the house was done and decorated with our own hands. Now the patchwork technique is experiencing a new surge in popularity, but already as an opportunity to make a unique thing for the home that expresses the taste and talents of novice and experienced craftswomen. Bedspreads, rugs, a do-it-yourself patchwork quilt, created without much hassle and expense, can become a bright spot in the interior, a good gift for new settlers or a young family.

Sewing and assembling a patchwork quilt or bedspread begins with preparing the workplace, because a huge number of patchwork requires significant space, for example, a large table. When choosing fabrics, first of all, the material for the front side is selected. Experienced craftsmen combine silk and chintz, linen and satin, satin and drape in one product. For beginner needlewomen, it is better to sew bedspreads, rugs or a patchwork quilt with your own hands from chintz, satin, flax, coarse calico, knitwear.

You can purchase ready-made sets of fabrics for patchwork, which are offered by the fair of craftsmen, but for novice needlewomen it is more interesting to audit cabinets, selecting unnecessary things and leftover fabrics.

An original blanket can be made from cut-out denim pieces. Before starting sewing, the fabric must be prepared - cut out thickened seams (on old clothes), shabby areas, wash, iron, make patterns.

Even if everything that comes to hand goes into business, you need to think over the color combinations and the general composition of the blanket. It is advisable to depict your ideas on sketches - sheets in a cage, painted with pencils. For beginner needlewomen, this technique is convenient: take as a basis one fragment, assembled from several parts, and then duplicate it several times. When choosing color combinations, it is important to take into account the color of curtains and tablecloths so that the new textiles harmoniously complement the interior. For sewing lining and edging, they usually take a solid, durable fabric.

In addition to the lining and top, in the structure of the patchwork quilt there should be insulation - batting, synthetic winterizer, holofiber. The filler can be natural (cotton, wool, semi-wool) or synthetic. The most popular synthetic winterizer is light, warm and moderately voluminous. For sewing blankets, choose a fabric with a density of 150-200.

For novice craftswomen, as an economy option, the master class suggests using an old blanket as insulation, if it is not too heavy. The rest of the assembly and sewing are the same.

To sew bedspreads, rugs or a patchwork quilt, as in the photo, you need to prepare:

  • Quality threads No. 45 or No. 50. The color is chosen to match or by contrast. You will also need simple thread for sweeping.
  • Sample made of thick cardboard or plastic. The shape - round, square, hexagonal, rhombus, striped - is chosen in accordance with the idea. For beginners, the easiest way to sew the first blanket is from squares using patterns. The size of the part depends on the overall size of the product and is 5 - 10 cm + 1 cm for the seams. For example, for a blanket of 8 x 8 cm squares, add a 1 cm allowance on each side and arrange a frame 1 cm wide. The total size of such a template will be 10x10 cm.
  • Instruments- in addition to an iron and a sewing machine, you need needles, pins, chalk or soap, scissors and a tape-centimeter.

How to sew a patchwork quilt correctly

Having sorted the flaps, you need to make patterns using a template. It turns out many identical squares with a seam line marked inside. For example, you can take a baby blanket 110x140cm. Taking into account the border for it, you need to make 192 squares measuring 8x8 cm.

A convenient technique for assembling the bedspread is to sew square blanks first into long strips, and then connect these rectangles to each other. If the circuit is in the form of triangles, they are sewn in pairs in the form of rhombuses or squares, in the future the assembly is similar to the first option.

In order for the seams to be accurate, neat, without distortions, before sewing, the flaps must be ironed along the contour of the intended seam.

We fold the two squares with the wrong side up, pin them off and sew. All seams must be ironed from the inside out, placing them in different directions so that there are no thickenings.

When the most laborious part of the work is finished - assembling the top, you can assemble blankets, blankets, bedspreads using the diagrams. On a flat and hard base, lay out the ironed lining with the wrong side up. For fixing it can be secured to the table (or floor) with tape.

From above, the filler is laid out and leveled so that the lining protrudes from the interlayer and the upper part by 5 cm.

Now quilts, blankets or bedspreads need to be properly quilted. The machine stitching technique involves starting from the center, sewing the squares diagonally to the edge (see the diagrams in the photo). To do this, a special embroidery foot must be installed on the machine. In addition to the usual stitching, you can also choose a curly contour - the sun, hearts, etc. the upper thread is selected to match the flaps, the lower thread is tucked into the tone of the lining. We sew with a weak thread tension. After finishing work, you need to trim the edges of the blanket. If the stitch is done by hand, the edge of the blanket is sewn over first.

Assembly technique:

  1. All layers of the blanket and the border are sewn on from the long sides;
  2. Everything is also sewn from the short sides;
  3. With a blind seam, it is necessary to process the corners of the blanket, hiding the extra pieces.

If there was no machine stitch, a hand stitch is performed after the piping. To do this, you need to take strong threads and quilt around the perimeter of the parts with a seam of 3-5 mm or at the joints of 4 squares, pointwise.

Sewing a patchwork quilt: master class

The master class "How to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands", which is offered by the fair of craftsmen, is suitable for both beginner needlewomen (with step-by-step descriptions) and experienced craftswomen, who can quickly navigate the instructions and save time. In the finished form, the size of the product is 1.2 x 1.3 m. The technique is also used for sewing bedspreads, only instead of a patchwork set "charm pack" you need to take "layer cake", cutting pieces 11.2 x 12.5 cm in size. blankets or blankets with stitches of about half a centimeter. This master class uses fabric 112 cm wide.

Tools and materials:

  • 80 shreds 12.5 x 12.5 cm or 2 charm packs.
  • One-color fabric in two shades (all-light and dark) - 120 cm.
  • Border in a suitable color - 45 cm.
  • Lining textiles - 1.3 x 1.4 m.
  • Sintepon - 1.4 x 1.3 m.
  • Iron and sewing machine.
  • Cutting mat, circular knife and tape measure.
  • Sewing accessories.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Cutting technique. 9 strips of 6.25 cm in width and 80 pieces measuring 6.25 x 11.25 cm should be cut from a light monochromatic fabric. From a dark fabric - the same number of the same blanks. (A set of "charm pack" - 160 pieces of the same size.) Prepare patterns from the fabric prepared for the border - 5 stripes 5.6 cm in width. See the diagrams.
  2. Parts procurement... Fold the printed and plain fabric patches together and sew along the long side. Prepare 160 rectangles in the same way. Iron the seams, folding the seams towards the printed fabric.
  3. Top assembly technique. Expand the rectangles so that the monophonic halves lie in steps (right-left, etc. - like the diagrams in the photo). Assembly: alternating 2 fragments with a light border and 2 with a dark one, it is necessary to form a row of 12 blocks.
  4. In the next row we sew the first block, laying so that the plain fabric is perpendicular (either from the side, then from above). For the next block, the border should be chosen in a contrasting color.
  5. Ironing. If you expand all the details, taking into account the diagrams, you get 13 rows of 12 blocks. Iron the top first, and then the rest of the blanket.
  6. Blanket assembly technique. Lay the lining on the floor with the wrong side up and secure. Lay the insulation and patchwork top sequentially on top. When the assembly is complete, pin everything off and make a 3-layer stitch.
  7. Stitch. You can quilt the blanket both in straight lines and in irregular zig-zags, like the diagram in the photo. The zig-zag technique in the second version will make it softer and acquire a cozy bulge.
  8. Border. Sew all the details of the border in one strip, smooth the seams in different directions. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the right side out and iron in 2 layers. In the middle of either side, you need to fix the strip to the edge, leaving a tail up to 30cm. it is advisable that the joints of the strips do not fall into the corners of the blanket. Sew a border around the perimeter (stitch width - half a centimeter). Overlock the edges of the interlayer, wrap the hem and stitch on the other edge.

The patchwork quilt is considered a symbol of home comfort and maternal care in many countries. The tradition of sewing bright, beautiful canvases arose at a time when there was a real need for it: solid fabric was in short supply. Now the tradition has returned with renewed vigor: patchwork quilts and things made using the patchwork technique have been at their peak of popularity for several years.

If you seriously decide to do patchwork, it is recommended to prepare all the necessary materials in advance. Judging by the set of tools, patchwork is an unpretentious matter available to everyone.

Mastering patchwork is not at all difficult. More about the patchwork technique for beginners in the material:

To start quilting, you need:

  • Textile. Of course, you can traditionally use old scraps of textiles from your grandmother's chest, but you will have to tinker with them before using them in business. The best option, which promises guaranteed success, is to choose special patchwork fabrics. These are sold at almost any fabric store.
  • Sewing machine. There are no special requirements for a patchwork machine. An amateur home sewing machine is quite suitable for this business. It is desirable that the working surface to the right of the needle is as large as possible. This will make it easier to sew large items such as a blanket.
  • Dispenser. This item is indispensable for highlighting clear squares. The best alternative to patchwork scissors.
  • Iron.
  • Pins and needles. You will need a lot of these little patchwork helpers. Choose thin quality pins and needles: they will last you longer, and will not break or bend.
  • Sewing scissors. 2 pairs are useful: for large appliqués and for small details and threads.
  • Threads. You should buy threads of different colors.

With such a set, you can safely start work without fear of losing sight of any significant trifles. Visit a specialty store and you will find all these gizmos there.

It is useful to have a magnet or a magnetic needle bar with you when doing patchwork. This will make it easy for your pins and needles to find and neutralize your jobsite.

How to sew a patchwork quilt using the patchwork technique

You will be happy with your decision if you get serious about making your patchwork quilt. This bright spot in the interior will complement the atmosphere of home warmth and comfort.

In general, a patchwork quilt consists of 4 parts:

  1. outside, sewn from pieces of fabric;
  2. seamy side, consisting of a single canvas;
  3. border around the perimeter of the product;
  4. filler (for example, synthetic winterizer).

If you want to make a very warm blanket, you can use holofiber as a filler. But remember that working with such a thick material can give you a lot of unnecessary trouble! Quilting a thick product can be difficult for both a novice craftswoman and a modest sewing machine.

How to match colors and textures for a patchwork quilt.

To make the blanket look flawless, you need to choose the right materials for the front of the product. It is important to follow the rules for combining color and pattern, as well as the compatibility of textures.

In general, a patchwork quilt assumes a slight tackiness and negligence, but some recommendations are necessary for compliance:

  • The thickness of the shreds must be exactly the same, otherwise the product will look ridiculous. Together, the pieces sewn together should resemble a single colorful canvas, and not several dozen multi-colored scraps.
  • There should be some logic in the pattern of your blanket. To do this, it is convenient to sew shreds into identical blocks or stripes, and in turn, sew them together, forming the front side of the blanket.
  • In advance, you should think about the style in which the canvas will be made. The classic lurid patchwork is somewhat different from the modern style, where more emphasis is placed on geometrically clear and monochromatic blocks. You can also make a decorative element using this technique for shocking art deco, modern, kitsch trends.
  • When choosing colors, pay attention to the color wheel and the order of the shades. Nearby, either contrasting colors (for example, blue and yellow) or nuanced combinations (for example, different shades of green for one block) look best. Do not forget about the general color scheme of the room in which your blanket will "live".
  • Don't go overboard with patterned segments. Too many different patterns on one blanket can disrupt the composition.

If you decide to use recycled fabric for your work, then you need to prepare it. Wash, starter and iron the material.

How to sew the patchwork quilt itself: a master class for beginners

So, if you have completed all the necessary preparations, have gained patience, creative energy and strength of inspiration, then you can!

Below is a step-by-step instruction with which you can sew a 1 square meter blanket. m. in the patchwork technique:

  1. For such a blanket, 25 squares measuring 20 by 20 cm should be made. To make the details even and identical, it is recommended to cut them out according to the pattern. Draw a square of the indicated size on the cardboard, and then outline it with a larger square, leaving 1.5 cm from the first line. This will be a seam allowance. Cut out the resulting frame.
  2. Draw the fabric according to the pattern: the outer square will serve for cutting out the part, and the inner one for the seam. For the first blanket, take 4-5 colors. Cut 5-6 squares of each type.
  3. Now place the squares as they should be on the piece.
  4. Now we start sewing! To do this, fasten the first 2 pieces with pins and sew along the seam line. Iron the seam and start on the next piece. So you should connect pieces of 5 pieces in a line, and then sew these lines together into a single canvas.
  5. When the assembly of the bright part is over, we begin to hem the insulation and the back of the blanket. Take a thin layer of padding polyester or fleece, which will be 3-5 cm larger than the finished front part on each side, as well as a plain cloth of the same size.
  6. Sew them together along the inner square (about 97 x 97 cm). Then start joining the resulting part to the front side.
  7. Pin the backdrop with a few pins; the bigger, the better. Make sure that the materials fit snugly together so that the product turns out to be even.
  8. Now you need to properly quilt the blanket: go along all the seams and around the perimeter. It is important that the new seam deviates slightly from the first: about half a centimeter.
  9. Now carefully cut off the excess pieces of fabric and insulation. It is important that the sides coincide with each other.
  10. To close the edges of the blanket, you need to make side strips. Cut 4 identical pieces of plain fabric (in contrast to the back) measuring 110 x 10 cm.
  11. Now you need to outline the stripes: leave 2 cm on the folds for the seam on both sides and 6 in the middle for the visible border of the blanket.
  12. Use safety pins to secure the hem. Fold over 2 cm on each side and wrap the rest over the edge. You should end up with 3 cm of fabric, framing the duvet on both sides.
  13. Sew the 4 sides neatly, folding over the excess fabric at the corners.
  14. Your blanket is ready!

Of particular importance in patchwork is pinning and ironing the edges. If something was done inaccurately, then the whole composition may "float" to the side.
